Job Requisition Number 00002359
Field(s) of Specialization Ocean and Climate Science
Position Title Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Department EIL Lamont Divisions
Division Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory
Location Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
Summary Description

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist (PDRS) position in the Climate Data Science Lab, under the supervision of Prof. Ryan Abernathey.

The PDRS will conduct research as part of the multi-institutional collaborative project “Multiscale Machine Learning In Coupled Earth System Modeling” (M2LInES). The overall goal of M2LInES is to develop interpretable Machine Learning models to deepen our understanding of complex processes in the climate system. This innovative effort will use big data from high-resolution simulations together with machine learning models to improve the representation of subgrid physics in the ocean, sea-ice and atmosphere components of existing climate models. Lamont’s role within this collaboration is to develop data-driven parameterizations for ocean sub-gridscale tracer transport and air-sea interaction, focusing on upper-ocean mesoscale processes. Beyond this specific project, the ARS will work closely with the broader M2LInES team to explore innovative methodologies for data-driven learning of GCM subgrid physics.
