We have an exciting opportunity for a Facilities Assistant IV located at our campus in Temecula, CA. Under general direction, the Facilities Assistant IV performs a variety of skilled preventive and semi-skilled maintenance tasks, performs checks of all preventive maintenance projects and/or serves in a general utility function of all maintenance duties with primary responsibility for construction and repairs.  This position requires independent performance of a wide variety of skilled preventative and semi-skilled maintenance tasks.  Technical supervision is rarely available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements and duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this class.
 

  • Perform preventive maintenance, including that for HVAC air handler equipment, exhaust fans and blowers; change filters, adjust belts, replace fan shaft and bearing; oil and replace motors and bearings
  • Perform preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles, including oil changes, grease jobs, adjustment and replacement of belts; check batteries and tires; keep equipment full of gas and fluids; perform safety check on brakes and steering parts; wash and clean vehicles
  • Perform routine maintenance of silver recovery machine; clean grill exhaust filters for the kitchen; perform semi-skilled maintenance such as disassemble, repair and reassemble toilet fixtures, electrical fixtures, lights, pipes, etc. 
  • Move  furniture and equipment and set up for special functions; assist higher level Facilities Assistants; operate equipment/machinery, drive a truck or tractor; transport materials; dig holes and assemble furniture/equipment; assist in remodeling, including carpentry, painting, masonry, installation of tile, electrical and plumbing; demolition, and/or any related semi-skilled maintenance responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance on a regularly assigned basis for the majority of time; responsibility for a specific area
  • Grounds keeping, mow the lawns, prune bushes and trim trees, maintain weed control, fertilize, control pest invasion, and perform sprinkler and irrigation functions
  • Building Maintenance, consisting of general basic and emergency building repairs, electrical repair and maintenance, plumbing repairs, control and maintain air conditioning and heat functions
  • Custodial duties such as; pick up and empty trash, replace liners in trash cans, clean and sanitize restrooms, vacuum and shampoo carpets, and maintain complete floor care including mopping, buffing and stripping
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 
The incumbent should possess knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment necessary for preparation and maintenance of the facilities and grounds
  • Horticultural practices and methods used in planting, cultivating, and maintenance of turf
  • Methods and procedures for the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems
  • Herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance
  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance
  • Safe work practices related to the operation of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Operation and repairing of HVAC, heating and electrical systems
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in construction
 The incumbent should possess skills in:
  • Working effectively as a team members

  • Maintaining documentation and records.
The incumbent should possess the ability to:
  • Prepare and maintain physical education and athletic fields, facilities, grounds and department areas
  • Measure, layout, mark and line playing fields in accordance with specifications for the sport
  • Design, install, maintain and repair irrigation systems
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints and specifications related to irrigation systems
  • Mix and apply specialized chemicals to control and eradicate weeds, insects and other pests on facility grounds
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance
  • Analyze problems, develop and evaluate solution alternatives
  • Work independently and exercise sound independent judgment within policy guidelines
  • Understand and follow written/oral instructions
  • Estimate time and material requirements for assigned duties/projects
  • Prepare clear, concise and accurate reports
  • Ability to lift over 30 pounds
  • Train and provide work direction and guidance to others
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A high school diploma or GED; AND
  2. Four (4) years of varied and increasingly responsible, high level of skill in mechanical systems and/or automotive repair 
  3. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff

SUBSTITUTION
  • Substitution for the professional experience requirement are allowed, as follows:
    • A reasonably equivalent combination of training and experience as an automotive or maintenance mechanic that will demonstrate achievement of the required skill level  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 60-days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District.
    • If selected, employment commencement is contingent upon successful enrollment in the District's DMV Pull Program.  Employees enrolled in the DMV Pull Program MUST continuously maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Six (6) months of experience using a personal computer
  2. One (1) year of professional supervisory or lead experience
  3. Possession of a Forklift Certification (*attach copy of current certificate)
  4. Prior experience in approaching work and interaction with colleagues and/or students in an equity-minded manner. Ability to promote an inclusive and welcoming work/education environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential job functions.

Environment:  Work environment varies based on the demands and needs during each day which will include outdoor walking and standing.  Sitting in an office or a meeting.  Work is performed primarily outdoors.  May require travel from site to site and withstand constant exposure to year-round climate conditions.  Walk the grounds on foot or with a District vehicle.

Physical: Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an outdoor setting and travel from site to site; to stand or sit for extended periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to carry, push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to lift or move 50 to 70 pounds frequently; and to verbally communicate to exchange information in person, via the radio and on the telephone.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 
Initial salary placement for this position is from Step 1 to Step 3 depending on the amount of reasonably related experience.  The job is a Classified position, Level 15, working full time, 40 hours per week, 12 months.  The position serves District-Wide; applicants may be assigned to any district facility.  The current work schedule is Monday - Thursday 6:00 am - 3:30 pm and Friday 7:00 am - 11:00 am. Work hours are subject to change depending on department needs.

A twelve-month probationary period must be successfully completed before the selected candidate is considered a permanent employee of the District. The District provides a contribution towards medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.  Vacation and sick leave are provided.  PERS participation is required for retirement eligible employees.  As a condition of employment candidates will be required to complete a live scan for fingerprint clearance and a Tuberculosis (TB) test/Tuberculosis Risk Assessment form developed by the State Department of Public Health.

THE COMMUNITY
The area provides a diverse geography that includes recreational lakes, mountains, desert and wide-open spaces.  MSJC is located about 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 50 miles west of Palm Springs.  There is freeway access to ocean beaches, skiing and cultural offerings in San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange County. Weekend recreational opportunities are a few hours away in Las Vegas, Arizona and nearby mountain resorts.  Local theater productions and art galleries provide year-round entertainment, including the famous Ramona Festival and Pageant.
