SALARY RANGE: $55,000-$75,000

SUMMARY: The Director of Accounting and Controller oversees the daily operations of the Finance Department, including student accounts, accounts payable, donations, general ledger, and financial reporting. The Director is responsible for timely, accurate financial reporting throughout the organization and ensures the University has adequate systems in place to maintain compliance with accounting principles, policies, and regulations.


  • Provide daily supervision of the areas of student billing, cash receipts and banking, accounts payable, and financial reporting.
  • Oversee the chart of accounts, general ledger, and operating ledger, including the preparation and review of all entries and reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes for all funds including required accruals, reconciliations, and closing journal entries.
  • Oversee bank statement reconciliations.
  • Develop cash flow forecasts.
  • Ensure cash transfers are correct, timely, and sufficient to meet University obligations and cash flow needs.
  • Assist with preparation of the annual financial statements, notes and supporting schedules.
  • Coordinate external audits, respond to auditor reports and recommendations, propose and implement approved plans of action.
  • Prepare monthly departmental financial reports
  • Prepare quarterly ratio analysis and budget to actual analysis.
  • Conduct internal reviews to ensure compliance, adequacy of controls, efficiency, and effectiveness of financial systems.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations. Analyze new laws and professional pronouncements and present recommendations for their application and implementation as needed.
  • Assist the VP for Business in creating short and long-range financial forecasts to facilitate decisions and planning including cash flow estimates.
  • Provide training on budget and fiscal processes and procedures.
  • Prepare periodic financial analysis reports at the request of the VP for Business.
  • Oversee the preparation of tax filings on a timely basis, including Federal 990, State CT-12, and 1099 processing.
  • Provide direct supervision of Finance departmental staff. This includes providing feedback and annual performance evaluations to support the overall goals of the University.
  • Serve as the financial representative on University committees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards and federal, state, and local regulations related to non-profit entities and higher education institutions.
  • Strong computer and data reporting skills. Proficiency with Microsoft applications including Word and Excel. Experience with Abila MIP preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret and apply financial information, technical procedures, and government regulations, as well as the ability to effectively communication this information to internal and external constituents.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and the use and potential of technology in financial services.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment with a high level of accuracy.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Ability to present information effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to successfully train and motivate others.
  • Ability to maintain a strong customer service orientation using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to operate with high ethical standards of conduct and confidentiality.


  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in accounting, finance, or related fields required.
  • CPA licensure preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of accounting experience. Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
