BASIC FUNCTION:

Cultivate a forward-looking and relevant vision for the future of engineering education and research, emphasizing disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas, by working in collaboration with faculty and key constituencies. As a member of the Council of Deans/Provost’s leadership team, actively participate in the development of the University’s Academic Plan, its strategic priorities, and assure that the goals of the College are aligned with the goals of the Plan. Advance the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and justice and provide accountability for progress on diversity related initiatives. Oversee the College’s budget and budget planning process to ensure that resources are allocated strategically. Provide leadership in the oversight of the College’s undergraduate and graduate programs, curricula, personnel, research enterprise, and budget ensuring efficient and effective programs of learning, discovery, and outreach. Lead in a manner that advances a climate in which excellence, creativity, ethics, inclusion, equity, and diversity are fostered among faculty, staff, and students. Engage in robust fundraising in support of the College’s research and educational programs. Oversee and ensure the accreditation processes, especially ABET, sustain and expand partnerships with national and international academic/research institutions, business and industry, federal, state, and local government, alumni, and other University programs and community constituents.

Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In collaboration with faculty and key constituencies, develop and implement a vision and strategic plan for the College that is relevant and forward-looking. Provide effective leadership, direction, and support in establishing, communicating, and achieving short- and long-term goals and initiatives to advance the college’s strategic goals and the education, research, and community service missions of the College and the University. Effectively communicate the vision and strategic priorities of the College to all internal and external constituencies.

Work collaboratively with the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and the Graduate School to ensure the enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students in programs in the College meet the University’s expectations. Oversee academic student support services within the College to ensure student retention and success.

Spur the development of and provide oversight of relevant undergraduate and graduate programs, research, outreach, and community service initiatives that reflect the disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas and fields of engineering that respond to current and future societal needs, trends, and problems.

Ensure that undergraduate and graduate programs underscore the importance of a well-rounded educational experience for engineers, instilling a sense of social responsibility and emphasizing oral and written communication skills to prepare engineering graduates to shape and support societal needs in the future.

Lead efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion focused on recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and students from underrepresented groups, curriculum transformation, and student success within the College.

Grow the research enterprise of the College, including external funding, and provide leadership in the development, coordination, management and communication of research programs and initiatives that respond to societal needs and emerging grant opportunities. Encourage and support large scale, group research activities and opportunities.

Support and mentor faculty and students in their scholarly endeavors.

Working collaboratively with the URI Foundation and Alumni Engagement Office, lead robust fundraising efforts on behalf of the College. Work collaboratively to establish and sustain productive partnerships and to advance external research funding opportunities leading to robust external funding for College strategic initiatives, programs, and research and scholarship activities.

Provide strategic leadership and management oversight of the College’s financial, human, and physical resources, including the recruitment and development of college faculty and staff; and allocation and administration of the College’s budget and extramural funds, procurement, property management, personnel services, logistical support services and program evaluation.

Serve as a member of various University committees and advisory councils and of regional and national associations. Meet with deans, faculty, and students on a variety of matters, and with other constituencies and University personnel as appropriate for consultation, discussion, and examination of views, policies, and procedures.

Consult with the Provost and his/her staff on policies, budgets and other activities that affect the College and its various programs.

Ensure compliance with all applicable government and funding agency laws and regulations.

Serve as the chief public spokesperson for the College within the University, and to the public at both the state and federal levels; serve on committees and attend public hearings that affect the interests of the College.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Within area of responsibility, oversee adherence to rules, regulations and procedures mandated and/or recommended by the NCAA and the University.

Perform other duties as required.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, printers, word processing, database and management software. Must be a US Citizen.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED:

1. An earned doctorate and academic credentials including scholarly achievements appropriate for the rank of Professor with tenure in one or more departments within the College of Engineering.

2. Demonstrated leadership skills.

3. Demonstrated administrative and management skills.

4. Demonstrated experience advancing issues of diversity, inclusion and equity (including an emphasis on gender and multicultural issues.)

5. Demonstrated experience with the recruitment and retention of qualified professional staff and faculty.

6. Demonstrated financial and human resources management experience at a research University.

7. Demonstrated experience in accreditation of academic programs (especially ABET) and collaborative decision-making at a research University.

8. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

9. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

10. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a broad array of constituencies.

11. Demonstrated experience in fundraising and/or securing government or private support.

12. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

13. Must be US Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED:

1. Demonstrated ability to articulate a comprehensive understanding of engineering education, research, and outreach in a public learning-centered land and sea grant university, including understanding the changing demands placed on engineers in the 21st century, and how these will be reflected in the curriculum of the future.

2. Demonstrated ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments that consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

3. Strong record of accomplishments and/or credentials in scholarly research, education, and professional service.

4. Demonstrated success in building partnerships and collaborative relationships within and outside of the university environment, including efforts to promote the development and transfer of technology to create economic growth.
