The Plant Pathology team at the Montana State University Eastern Ag Research Center in Sidney, MT is seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to conduct plant pathology research related to Fusarium root rot of pulse crops.

General Statement

This position provides opportunities to attend both in- and out-of-state meetings as well as interact with famers and industry. The EARC is located in the MonDak research triangle which encourages interagency collaborations with researchers of multiple disciplines. It contains spacious facilities including a dedicated laboratory and greenhouse space with modern equipment. Inexpensive on-site housing may be available.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the plant pathology program at EARC by developing new and innovative scientific approaches; lead collaborative research efforts to study the effect of agronomic practices on soil-borne diseases of pulse crops
  • Designing field studies, collecting data, performing statistical analysis, writing reports, and presenting findings at regional/national meetings.
  • Work with farmers and EARC staff to diagnose plant disease and make management recommendations.
  • Assist with writing state/regional and national competitive grant proposals for possible funding and publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals with minimal supervision.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology, Agronomy or closely related discipline with research experience in the management of fungal plant pathogens.
  • Expertise in field research of agronomic crops including field design, field plot layout, plot maintenance including fertilization and pest management, harvesting of experimental plots, and procedures and practices associated with grain cleaning and processing.
  • Experience with greenhouse and laboratory research and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis and software.
  • Strong record of publication in peer-reviewed journals

  • Experience with small plot equipment operation.
  • Research experience relating to control of diseases caused by Fusarium spp.
  • Experience with plant disease diagnostics and pathogen identification.
  • Familiar with methods involved in quantification of soil-borne pathogens.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    • Travel to off-station research plots, occasionally after hours and overnight, will be required.
    • Must possess a Montana Pesticide Applicator’s License, or be eligible and able to obtain one within 6 months of date of hire.
    • Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points).

    Physical Demands
    • Must be able to enter, exit, and operate numerous types of farm equipment; requires working around loud, heavy equipment, and occasionally working at elevated positions (grain bins, roofs).
    • Must be able to transport 40lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Must be able to navigate rough terrain for long periods of time.
    • Must be able to work with and around pesticides, other plant materials and in dusty environments.
    • Requires the ability to wear a respirator or related safety equipment.
