Job Description:

Design and implement projects to determine synapse ultrastructure changes in a model of age-related cognitive decline in the Harris Lab in the Department of Neuroscience. Will lead a team to determine how learning is affected in the aged brain using a multi-pronged approach, including molecular biology, physiology, behavior, and electron microscopy. The candidate will be expected to apply for independent funding within 2 years of starting the position with anticipation of preparing for an independent research career.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and expand behavior assays, and molecular biology tools and experiments.

  • Train graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scientists, and other research staff on behavior assays and molecular biology procedures.

  • Participate in teaching of some lectures in areas of expertise in courses within department.

  • Mentor undergraduate students in the lab to obtain honor theses.

  • Assist with yearly IACUC reports and writing new IACUC protocols.

  • Author papers and publish findings from research projects and technical developments.

  • Actively pursue independent extramural funding sources.


Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D in Neuroscience or Molecular Biology.

  • Five years of postdoctoral research experience in Neuroscience.

  • Experience writing and publishing papers and at least three publications in high quality journals.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience training undergraduate research students in neuroscience.

  • Knowledge about literature of synaptic ultrastructure.

  • Experience developing and setting up behavior assays

  • Experience in electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, in vivo perfusion

  • Experience with PCR, molecular cloning, and recombinant protein expression

  • Experience designing gene modification in vivo using the CRISPR-Cas9 system

  • Experience in hippocampal slice physiology


Salary Range

$70,000 + depending on qualifications


Working Conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. 

  • May work around standard office conditions

  • Use of manual dexterity
