Summary Description

The goal and focus of the Operations/Human Resources department is to provide a solid foundation and structure that aims to support and enhance the employee experience at each stage in the employee lifecycle. The Ops/HR department ensures that our employees are provided accurate, timely, and thorough information and have the resources to perform as expected, are engaged, acknowledged, and supported in all aspects of the workplace. Our employees are the most important asset of the organization, and we strive to ensure we have a positive, productive, and healthy workplace where everyone works to realize our established mission and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Human Resources oversees all aspects of human resources practices and processes and serves as the primary point of contact for all employee-related issues. This position will be responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The responsibilities for the Director of Human Resources include but are not limited to supervision of selected HR staff, employee relations, performance management, oversight of reasonable accommodations and leaves of absence and ensuring HR operations run smoothly.

Specific duties will include managing activities such as job design, recruitment strategies, onboarding new employees, implementing systems for managing and evaluating staff benefits, performance management, training and development, retaining employees, supporting payroll functions (time allocations), and recommending new policies, approaches, and procedures to support and enhance the employee experience. The Director of Human Resources partners with management to ensure that strategic HR goals are aligned with the organization’s initiatives.

Essential duties also include the following:

  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop programs that are responsive to trends in employee retention, satisfaction and engagement.
  • Build and maintain a trusted space for staff members to engage in open dialogue regarding their daily responsibilities, challenges, and reflections on organizational culture.
  • Designs and implements effective strategies for employee professional development, leadership development, and succession planning.
  • Strategic oversight of the annual Performance Evaluation process.
  • Analyzes and provides guidance on compensation and benefits trends to implement across the organization.
  • Ensures all company HR policies (i.e. HR Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual, HR Standard Operating Procedures) are up-to-date and applied consistently. This includes changes in policies and procedures based on employee and organizational needs.
  • Investigates employee issues and conflicts and works in collaboration with the General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer to bring them to resolution.
  • Participates in Strategic Planning to ensure deliverables for the organization’s operational goals are met.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local employment laws and regulations. Ensure timely filing of required government reports, forms, audits and surveys. Manage relationships with compliance agencies and external stakeholders.
  • Advance the organization’s JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) strategies by integrating it into all human resources systems, structures, and processes.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Employee may be assigned additional or alternate duties as organizational needs require.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability typically required.

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in human resources, business management, business administration, or other relevant fields AND equivalent 10+ years’ proven working experience in an HR capacity.
  • Graduate degree in related field preferred.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, large non-profit or public or private sector organization supporting as an HR Director or Manager.
  • Excellent organizational skills and judgment; ability to prioritize work, manage time and multiple priorities, and meet deadlines; attention to detail and accuracy; ability to set realistic goals and objectives.
  • Strong communication skills: ability to exercise diplomacy, gather information from others, make inquiries and synthesize information; ability to navigate difficult conversations with appropriate discretion and confidentiality, ability to convey information and explain or discuss organizational policy and procedures with others in person or by telephone and displays a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Knowledge of HR management software, systems, and databases.
  • SHRM or PHR certification, a plus.
  • Knowledge of Asana project management techniques and tools, a plus.
  • Research experience using quantitative and qualitative methods, a plus.

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state labor laws and HR best practices.
  • Editing and proofreading skills are essential.
  • Ability to coordinate several tasks at one time and perform well under pressure; ability to fill in for and perform the duties of designated staff, as needed; ability to relieve management of certain key functions.
  • Strong skills and experience developing and implementing organization-wide justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Ability to work with staff from diverse racial, sexual orientation, gender identity and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to build and effectively manage interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company.
  • Professional demeanor, able to collaborate and communicate well with remote teams.

Other Position Requirements

  • This is a 40-hour per week hybrid role with expectations to come into the office on an as-needed basis.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally.
  • Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekend days.
