Position Summary:

The School of Architecture at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking qualified applicants for a term, renewable, variable-time, non-tenure-track faculty position serving the College's online and/or on-campus undergraduate Architectural Studies and Masters Programs. The academic title will reflect the academic degree status of the selected individual. Effective date for the position is August 16, 2021.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities: This position will focus on undergraduate and graduate coursework in both the Architectural Studies and Masters programs. The selected individual will teach a variety of upper division undergraduate and graduate courses in design, and in one or more areas of specialization of interest and utility in the continuation of the advancement of the program, and consistent with the mission of the school. Examples of target courses include (but are not limited to): Integrated Studios and support courses, ARC 242 Building Technology I: Wood, ARC341 Building Technology II: Masonry and Concrete, ARC361 Structures I: Statistics and Steel, ARC362 Structures II: Wood and Concrete Structures III: Analysis and Lateral Forces.   • Carry a variable percent time up to 100% load in teaching online or on-campus architectural design and technical course(s) in Architectural Studies and/or Graduate Architecture Programs. Course assignments may vary depending on program needs.
  • Maintain appropriate accessibility to the students through scheduled office hours and/or online chat sessions and assist students with course-related problems.
  • Participate in innovative teaching, curriculum development, and program connections.
  • Attend School meetings and/or maintain direct contact with School Administration.
  • Participate in program support activities such as student portfolio reviews, critique/jury sessions, program reviews, and accreditation reviews.
  • Establish positive working relationships with faculty, students, staff, and the profession.
  • Engage in other assignments as determined by the Director of the School of Architecture.
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a master's degree in Architecture or a closely related field, and at least five years of professional experience and/or related university-level teaching experience. Applicants who hold a bachelor's or professional degree in Architecture and/or closely related field will be considered if they have 7 years of relevant tested professional experience that includes documented evidence of career advancement plus, e.g., certification and/or professional registration as a licensed architect. Individuals holding a bachelor's degree will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructor. Individuals holding a master's degree will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Lecturer. The rank of Assistant Professor of Practice requires a terminal degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Architecture and/or related field (PhD or Doctoral). Complete passage of the A.R.E. leading to Professional Licensure and NCARB certificate and significant professional project experience. Evidence of teaching and/or tested professional experience in Architecture and/or Construction. Interest and ability to teach building construction, structures, and technical courses from an architectural perspective.
