IHC’s accredited programs advance the quality of healthcare, with measurable benefits for patient satisfaction, clinician career satisfaction, patient health outcomes and durable relationships of trust.

Job description

At this critical and historic moment, the Institute for Healthcare Communication (IHC) is seeking a dynamic and visionary educator to become its next Chief Executive Officer. This individual will have the opportunity to position our organization to lead the revisioning and transformation of communication education in healthcare. Enormous changes are underway in human and veterinary health involving new work processes, enhanced multi-professional team care, and a central role for patients/clients in their own services. Digital media and new apps play a rapidly increasing part in clinical visits, team coordination and professional education. Improved work environments are needed to support clinicians through these transformations and the Covid-19 pandemic and to prevent burnout. All these changes depend upon improvements in healthcare communication, requiring new forms of education across the board.

The IHC is uniquely positioned to lead the way. For 34 years, we have been a leader in designing and disseminating instructional programs in healthcare communication, reaching more than 230,000 frontline practitioners in human medicine and over 150,000 veterinary trainees, and developing more than 3,500 faculty members in human and veterinary medicine. We enjoy a strong and trusted reputation as a non-profit, collaborating with more than 250 hospitals, professional schools, professional societies, malpractice insurers and other organizations. Through presentations, publications and research we have been a leading advocate for improving the quality of care and the professional satisfaction of clinicians.

IHC now seeks to transform itself in support of the current transformation of veterinary and human healthcare. Like our clients, we have moved quickly to bring activities online that had previously been conducted face-to-face. We are eager to pursue further innovations in remote, on-site and hybrid learning and to meet our clients’ emerging needs with new course offerings in such diverse areas as relational dimensions of quality improvement, patient/client relationships in virtual visits, fostering effective relationships on virtual teams, fostering relational workplace cultures, and (for our certified teachers) how to teach communication skills online.

With the approaching retirement of our highly successful CEO of 12 years, Dr. Kathleen Bonvicini, IHC is at a crossroads. We seek an experienced and visionary healthcare communications educator to mobilize our organization in identifying and harnessing the unique opportunities in today’s healthcare environment. Administrative experience, distance learning experience, familiarity with human and/or veterinary medical practice, and an extensive professional network are highly desirable.
