LEO is looking for a proactive, self-starter who desires to be part of solving one of the most critical issues our nation faces today – poverty. The Research Design Manager will work closely with the other Research Design Manager, senior researchers, and LEO’s research operations team to transform innovative research ideas into well-designed impact evaluations. These evaluations, implemented by social service providers and researchers, will generate impactful data that advances anti-poverty work. The Research Design Manager is pivotal to the success of LEO’s projects.

The Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) at the University of Notre Dame is a research center dedicated to reducing poverty and improving lives in the United States through evidence-based programs and policies. LEO matches top research with passionate leaders in social service agencies to conduct impact evaluations that identify the innovative, effective, and scalable programs and policies that help people move permanently out of poverty.

Who we need:
We are looking for someone who believes that impacting poverty is possible. The Research Design Manager leads social service providers as they navigate the research design process, translating research questions into viable impact evaluations. High-quality research design is foundational for identifying impactful, evidence-based solutions to effectively alleviate poverty.

The Research Design Manager’s top priorities will be to:
  • Independently project manage a portfolio of complex projects through LEO’s project design process until the point of project launch.
    • “Project design” – A 16-week process led by the Research Design Manager in collaboration with senior researchers and social service providers to design impact evaluations. This includes defining the intervention, conducting power calculations, designing logistics for study enrollment, and initiating relationships with staff and data stakeholders.
    • “Project launch” – Once the project completes the design process, the Research Design Manager focuses on ensuring a timely launch, enabling researchers to begin enrolling participants in the study. Enrollment marks the transition of the project management role from the Research Design Manager to a LEO Pre-Doc.
  • Bridge the gap between providers and researchers by gathering researcher and provider input in formulating a research design, ensuring that all LEO projects have well-defined interventions, measurable outcomes, sufficient sample sizes, and unbiased comparison groups. This includes identifying problems and proposing creative solutions.
  • Liaise between researchers, service providers, and marketing consultants to ensure all projects have a well-designed recruitment plan.
  • Execute all tasks required to launch a research project, including but not limited to submitting IRB protocols, drafting data sharing agreements, and completing pre-analysis plans.
  • Ensure a strong project hand-off to a LEO Pre-Doc at the point of project launch with a focus on relationship maintenance and project momentum.

Please note: This is a five-year, limited-term position. Contingent on funding, the position may be extended.

Minimum Qualifications

The Research Design Manager owns the achievement of LEO’s research design goals–developing robust impact evaluations that address key questions related to anti-poverty service provision. The ideal candidate will have exceptional project management skills as well as strong understanding of the research process in a social science setting.

Required:
  • A deep commitment to the mission of both LEO and the University
  • Undergraduate degree in Economics or a related social science field
  • Ability to independently manage multiple complex projects
  • Thorough knowledge of randomized controlled trials and applied economics research
  • Ability to identify and solve problems without clear solutions
  • Highly organized with ability to juggle multiple demands simultaneously
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to lead teams of social service providers and senior researchers
  • Self-directed, with willingness to take initiative over project management and explore potential evaluations
  • Sincere interest in the design stage of research

Preferred:
  • Experience working with economic researchers as a research assistant
  • Experience working for or with social service providers
  • Statistical programming experience (STATA, R, SAS)
