Position Summary

Reports to: Director II, Athletics and Fitness

The College of Southern Maryland’s Athletic Programs provide competitive opportunities that promote learning and development outside the classroom and encourage interaction among students and between students and the college community. The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for planning, scheduling, and managing all home athletic events, providing athletic training services to all athletes, ordering equipment/uniforms, hiring officials, and contract negotiation.

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as the Athletic Trainer and provides injury prevention, injury evaluation, first aid, and emergency care for home training sessions and athletic events to all CSM and visiting athletes.
  • Maintains medical documentation for student-athletes in accordance with Maryland state law.
  • Ensures Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPPA) is followed.
  • Follows approved position statements (mandates) set forth by the Board of Certification (BOC), a national governing body.
  • Develop and facilitate rehabilitation programs for student athletes.
  • Works with the Athletic and Fitness Director to assess potential safety hazards at all home athletic events/training sessions and with the use of equipment. 
  • Enforces Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines.
  • Provide direct patient care to the student-athletes participating in varsity sports. trainer.
  • Assist in game day set-up at all home athletic events.
  • Assists with Sports Information Director duties, including coordinating and publishing the Athletic website, calendar, and social media pages.
  • Maintains communication and a collaborative working relationship with the Community Relations Director to ensure proper media coverage of athletics.
  • Creates and maintains policies regarding the well-being of student-athletes overall health, including lighting, mental health, concussion, and weather policies. 
  • Assists in managing all scheduled use of the Physical Education Building and athletic fields for college and non-college groups through Astra.
  • Assist in developing the short-term and long-term capital facilities plan, including the PE Center, all athletic fields, tennis courts, and major equipment purchases. 
  • Region XX and MDJUCO tournament director for all athletic events CSM hosts. 
  • Serves as a Member of the Hall of Fame Committee
  • Serves on the Graduation Committee. 
  • Assists with scheduling travel in CSM-owned vans and buses for all CSM personnel. 
  • Works collaboratively with facilities to determine necessary service and repairs to vehicles. 
  • Reviews emergency action plans annually and ensures all athletic staff are trained in all processes. 
  • Supports all departmental activities/events.
  • Contributes to departmental, division and college wide strategic planning processes.
  • Train and ensure all coaching staff are First Aid and CPR certified.


Additional Duties:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or related field required. 
  • Experience with administrative, supervisory, managerial, and budgetary work. 
  • Experience with MS Windows programs (experience working on web design a plus)
  • Experience in events management.
  • Minimum of one year experience functioning as a Licensed/Certified Athletic Trainer
 
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree preferred.
 
Licenses, Certifications, or Additional Requirements:
  • Certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • State Athletic Training Licensure 
  • CPR/AED Certification

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate athletics and intramural sports programs
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work with professional integrity and discretion.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • The work is medium work, which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
