Organization Mission:
Harlem Academy drives equity of opportunity for promising students (grades 1-8), guiding them to thrive at the highest academic levels and one day make a mark on the world. As an independent school, Harlem Academy fills a unique gap in the education reform landscape. Students enter the school with average scores in the 74th percentile – too low to access selective programs with competitive admissions, but too high to receive attention at the local public and charter schools. We challenge students with a rigorous program, guiding them to gain 16 percentile points by eighth grade. This growth to the 90th percentile allows our students to move on to selective secondary schools, opening a door to the opportunities that follow.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the development director, the development and communications associate will work with the development team on execution of the annual giving, communications, and donor cultivation strategies for the year. As a member of the team, you will partner in the overall departmental responsibility to surpass fiscal year goals, manage external relationships, and deepen donors’ connection to the school.
Development Operations, Data Management, and Research:
  • Oversee segmentation of lists, in-house mailings, and ensure all data is accurately captured.
  • Work with the development team to manage and track key data on donors and prospects.
  • Conduct prospect research on individuals, foundations, and corporations as needed.
  • Support general development, communications, and strategy work as needed.

Volunteer Programs:
  • Serve as liaison among students, families, teachers, and volunteers to coordinate schedules, build strong partnerships, and shape positive experiences for our volunteers, many of whom are donors.
  • Assist in managing our weekly mentoring program.
  • Coordinate volunteer days with our corporate partners and other one-time volunteer opportunities.

Foundations Support:
  • Assemble foundation proposals and reports, including proofreading content, gathering support documents, and managing submissions.
  • Coordinate and execute mailings to prospective and current foundations.
Events:
  • Participate as a key member of the team in preparation for and implementation of all events (once we are able to return to in-person gatherings).
  • Qualifications: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and demonstrated interest in the school’s mission. They need excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and should show strong organizational skills and high attention to detail. Raiser’s Edge experience is strongly preferred.

The position currently is remote because of COVID-19, with daily responsibilities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and occasional work outside of regular hours.
