Position Overview

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Intern to join our Technology Assessment team in San Diego for Exact Sciences' 2025 Summer Internship Program. The Technology Assessment group is responsible for the evaluation of novel methodologies and instrumentation to benefit Exact Sciences' product portfolio spanning the cancer care continuum.

The successful candidate will work with a small team in the evaluation of emerging technologies - including novel NGS platforms and molecular biology methodologies - in support of a wide variety of research and product development applications and collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve key company objectives. This role is ideal for a driven individual with collaborative spirit and an interest in NGS technologies.

The Intern - Technology Assessment, with guidance from team members, works individually and in collaboration with others on multiple projects which are moderate to complex in scope. The successful candidate will work with others to plan experiments and will take an active role in their execution and interpretation of results. The intern is expected to quickly learn new techniques, communicate effectively with others, and present their work in a group setting.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with a small, fast-paced team in the evaluation of emerging technologies including Next Generation Sequencing, sample preparation, and molecular biology techniques.
  • Quickly learn and apply new methodologies through reading, discussion, and practice.
  • Conduct bench level experiments within several product or technology areas and identify problems and discrepancies.
  • Maintain lab notebook in a clear, complete, and consistent manner, following all legal, ISO, and QSR requirements.
  • Effectively communicate complex scientific concepts with team members.
  • Present and clearly communicate findings at data meetings, group meetings, and project team meetings.
  • Prepare reports and documentation providing the analysis or summarization of experimental results, outcomes, and next steps to supervisor, technical teams/groups, or project teams.
  • Work on individual assignments and with project team members, as appropriate, to meet department and project objectives.
  • Work within project timeframes with successful outcomes on multiple projects and key responsibilities.

Scheduling requirements:

  • Ability to work a designated schedule with the flexibility to coordinate schedules with team members and mentors.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
  • Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 50% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, or biotechnology.
  • Preference giving to candidates with a record of outstanding academic achievement.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Salary Range:

$37,000.00 - $59,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - San Diego on a full-time basis.
