The Stem Cell Morphogenesis and Molecular Therapies Laboratory is a research lab in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Notre Dame, led by Professor Donny Hanjaya-Putra. The lab works at the interface between engineering and medicine with a motivation on making stem cell and molecular therapies, as an effective method to model and treat diseases. The Lab Manager Technician will engage in strategic planning activities with the supervisor and other lab members and will provide leadership and oversee daily lab activities. They are expected to be in charge of lab specific administrative tasks, such as regulating lab funding, placing orders, keeping track of lab inventories, and daily lab chores. The Lab Manager Technician will work in the Multidisciplinary Research Building and McCourtney Hall 2 in a highly dynamic environment. Specific responsibilities include the following:
- Act as a point of contact between all laboratory groups utilizing cell culture and molecular biology; Develop, implement, and measure the success of following the general lab SOP; Check and resupply lab reagents and consumables; Interface with sales representatives from suppliers, order lab reagents and consumables in a timely way; Supervise students and staff for lab safety training renewal; Interface with Risk Management and IACUC for annual inspection and certification of laboratory; Help with budgeting research grant and submitting progress reports; Keep the lab clean and organized, delegating responsibilities as appropriate; Send lab coats for laundry quarterly.
- Keep lab equipment in good working condition, contact equipment company when problems arise; Keep track of lab general accounts including Adobe Illustrator, GraphPad, and Dropbox for annual license renewal; Keep track of liquid nitrogen tank, CO2 tank, and O2 tank, place orders when needed; Clean cell culture incubator weekly; Clean cell culture hood and water bath weekly; Develop and maintain scheduling methods for hoods, incubators, or other highly utilized equipment; Thaw and organize lab freezers annually; Back up microscope folders to the hard drives; Help with purchasing new equipment as needed; Form and update inventories for biologicals, chemicals and consumables; Develop and maintain scheduling methods for hoods, incubators or other highly utilized equipment.
- Primary stem cell isolation and culture; Make aliquots of lab common reagents; Routine mycoplasma testing; Chemical synthesis; Support on immunostaining, western blot, PCR, ELISA, and CRISPR/Cas9, FRET experiments.
Please note that this is a 3-year limited-term position, with renewal dependent upon funding.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree (5 years) or advanced certification beyond Bachelor’s
- At least 1 to 6 months of experience
- Required skills include: the ability to coordinate among different projects and manage the lab in an efficient way; basic cell culture and primary cell isolation skills; basic molecular biology skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to interface effectively with the lab. The Lab Manager will be involved in interdisciplinary research projects, and basic lab work skills are highly desired. Expected lab skills include, but are not limited to, routine stem cell culture, primary cell isolation and basic chemical synthesis procedures, as well as FRET microscopy. Skills in molecular biology, such as immunostaining, western blot, PCR, ELISA, and CRISPR/Cas9.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with animal models is preferred.
