Position Summary:
The HVACR Instructor provides quality instruction, during the day, evening and/or weekends, related to all aspects of HVAC-R including but not limited to, system service and maintenance, energy analysis and controls.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Present lectures and conduct discussions to increase student’s knowledge and competence of subject matter
  • Connect subject matter with related fields so that students get a feel for real world applications
  • Educate students in safe work practice application when using hand tools, shop equipment and when performing processes in the lab.
  • Supervise and monitor student’s use of tools and equipment to help ensure safe work practices are being executed at all times
  • Utilize technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience where appropriate, i.e. use of Blackboard, development and use of videos, visual aids, presentation material, etc., that aid in student understanding and adoption
  • Work together with department in the planning and development of course curriculum, for both current and future offerings, to keep our program aligned with industry and ahead of the curve wherever possible.
  • Collaborate with department on updating of any course material (syllabi, objectives, etc.), to keep courses and offerings fresh and aligned with industry and on the cutting edge wherever possible.
  • Participate in department meetings and program advisory committee meetings
  • Participate in college events, which may fall outside a faculty’s schedule, that promote our program and the college, such as; recruiting events, campus tours organized by the college, open houses and competitions sponsored by the department, etc.
  • Maintain technical knowledge of the HVAC field through active participation in professional development organizations, events, seminars, training, etc., and integrate relevant information into program.
  • Advise students on registration, course selections, career decisions and other academic and vocational concerns.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to student’s needs and circumstances.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress and submit final grade rosters each semester in accordance with college policy and FERPA.
  • Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and students for advisement and consultation.
  • Assist with hiring and oversee/direct part-time staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Hours/Schedule:
Hours vary based on class schedules.

Professional Instructors shall be responsible for a total of 450 contact hours per academic year. Each instructor is expected to be on campus at least four (4) days per week. If more than 25% of an Instructor’s base load contact hours are taught online, the Instructor is expected to be on campus for a minimum of three (3) days per week.

All professional instructors have a year-round professional responsibility to the College. The professional instructor’s base load responsibilities shall consist of (1) teaching/teaching preparation; (2) development and review (including curriculum, teaching methods, learning technologies); (3) department and institutional work (such as student outcomes assessment, curricular improvement), (4) student recruitment and student guidance, and (5) professional development.

An example of a typical professional faculty schedule for the Fall and/or Winter semester is below.

Base Load Assignment for Full Time Professional Faculty
Professional instructors will hold a minimum of five (5) office hours per week 5
Professional instructors shall be available for five (5) hours per week for meetings 5
Professional instructors shall be accountable for fifteen (15) preparation hours per week 15
Professional instructor shall be accountable for fifteen (15) hours of classroom instruction per week 15
Professional Faculty – 40-hour work week 40

Commitment to Professional Responsibilities—Faculty must make the work at WCC the primary work in their lives. Faculty must work well and hard to meet the goals of the College. Being a professional faculty member at Washtenaw Community College is a year-round responsibility which includes curriculum development, professional improvement and development, and other professional responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Earned Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally-accredited institution in HVAC, Industrial Technology or related field required. Minimum 5 years full-time work experience required. Associates degree in HVAC, Industrial Technology or related field may be considered with a minimum of 7 years full-time work experience.
  • The following certifications must be obtained within six months of hiring:
o ESCO CERTIFICATIONS (or its equivalent) Employment Ready Electrical, Heat, Air Cond., Light Commercial Refrigeration, Air Cond. and Low-Pressure Hydronic Heating.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficient computer skills, the ability to multi-task and organizational skills
  • Must be available to instruct days, nights and weekends.
  • Must be available year-round for events, college business, etc.
  • Must be able to demonstrate organizational skills, a positive management style and the ability to communicate effectively with students, administration and staff.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills in the maintenance of residential and light commercial HVAC-R systems.
