Lecturer/Area Industry Mentor-Marketing Sales
Job Description
This position is a full-time, academic year, non-tenure track Lecturer / Academic Program Associate in the KU School of Business. Responsibilities include instruction in the area of Marketing and development of students interested in careers in Professional selling via the Area Industry Mentor (AIM) component. Marketing and the Professional Selling Program are both high-growth and dynamic specializations within the School of Business, and the position is thus best-suited for individuals looking for a fast-paced environment. The AIM assists students who have reached junior standing in marketing with the goal of structuring their experiences and academic pursuits for successful transition to professional employment.
The start date for the position is January 1, 2025, for the Spring 2025 semester. However, the school is open to considering a Fall 2025 start for an exceptional candidate, if necessary. This position is limited term appointment, initially expiring May 16, 2026. Appointment is eligible for renewal annually with likely extension up to three years.
This position reports directly to the Marketing Area Director, with strong secondary reporting ties to the Professionalism Program Director. The position is designated as an on-campus position and will be officed in Capitol Federal Hall. Alternative and flexible work schedules may be evaluated as per KU policy and School guidelines.

40% Teaching – Marketing Area
10% Teaching Related Service
35% Area Industry Mentor (AIM): Marketing - Coordinate, execute and evaluate activities to support the KU School of Business’ Professional Program goals as it relates to professional selling. Independently utilize broad range of skills and tools to structure student experiences and academic pursuits for successful transition to professional employment including assessing professional readiness, coaching/mentoring, conducting industry outreach, building constituent relations, and tracking outcomes. Duties may include but are not limited to:
15% Professionalism Program Instruction (AIM) – As an member of the Area Industry Mentor (AIM) team, incumbent will also serve as instructor within the KU School of Business Professionalism Program. Duties include:
- Teach four (4) courses per academic year in the area of Marketing. Course assignments are typically 3 credit hours. Primary load will be undergraduate level courses but may include graduate courses if candidate meets current HLC guidelines for graduate instruction. Instruction may be in traditional classroom and/or on-line formats. Campuses may include Lawrence, Edwards, Leavenworth and/or other settings. Courses related to the Professionalism Program are not typically considered toward the minimum teaching load requirement. The Business School reserves the right to modify instructors course loads based on current needs of the School.
- Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to: course design and preparation, consultation and advising, and assignment of course grades.
10% Teaching Related Service
- Lecturers serve as participating members of departments and should engage in instruction-related activities beyond direct instruction. Examples include curriculum development committees and course improvement initiatives.
- Lectures should abide by the Area’s, School’s and University’s policies and procedures.
35% Area Industry Mentor (AIM): Marketing - Coordinate, execute and evaluate activities to support the KU School of Business’ Professional Program goals as it relates to professional selling. Independently utilize broad range of skills and tools to structure student experiences and academic pursuits for successful transition to professional employment including assessing professional readiness, coaching/mentoring, conducting industry outreach, building constituent relations, and tracking outcomes. Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Work in close coordination with Area Director, Director, Professional Selling Program, and Area Faculty to provide strategic direction to ensure co-curricular programs and course work contribute to professional readiness.
- Provide guidance to address knowledge, skill and experience gaps including referral to other university or Business School student services.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to students that would ultimately assist students in professional engagement upon graduation.
- Serve a key role in the development and maintenance of a formal and engaged network of industry partners and professional practitioners in the marketing discipline.
- Develop and maintain matrixes for tracking of key program outcomes.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other AIM program members and professional program staff.
- Complete or participate in other AIM related duties or activities that support the role, as assigned.
- May supervise employees.
15% Professionalism Program Instruction (AIM) – As an member of the Area Industry Mentor (AIM) team, incumbent will also serve as instructor within the KU School of Business Professionalism Program. Duties include:
- Provide instruction for up to three (3) one-hour credit courses within the professionalism program, per year. Primary course load will be sections of BUS 210 or BUS 230 for marketing but may include any course within the professionalism program. Course assignments are made by Professionalism Program Director. The Professionalism Program Director will coordinate with the Area Director if deviation from the identified primary course(s) is/are needed. The Business School reserves the right to modify instructors course loads based on current needs of the School.
- Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to, course design and preparation, consultation and advising, and assignment of course grades.
- Instructors should abide by the Area’s, School’s and University’s policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree plus five years of applied relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience or potential to mentor undergraduate business students.
- Demonstrated network or potential to establish strong industry relations locally and regionally.
- Demonstrated experience or potential to instruct undergraduate students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in business, marketing, advising, counseling or other closely related field.
- Familiarity with undergraduate business programs at KU.
