Purpose, Scope, Dimension:
The purpose of this position is to deliver program curriculum and instruction to adult participants in the academic areas of (reading, writing, English, mathematics) that facilitates the successful achievement of goals established in the Adult Learning Plan (ALP). Instruction is according to the individual needs of each participant as measured by pre and post testing with adult education state required assessment. Providing coaching and guidance for other program activities as it pertains to students’ enrollment, attendance, participation, and educational goals.
Scope:
This position follows guidelines and procedures established by the Adult Education Program. The Adult Education Instructor position is in the Workforce & Economic Development Division (WED), and reports to the Director of Adult Education & Gateway to College. This position facilitates instruction in all the GED subject areas (Reading Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies), ABE, ESL, HSE, in a classroom setting and administer assessments in preparation to improve skills and/or prepare for the GED Test (High School Equivalency). Teach adult students in postsecondary education remediation to improve math, reading, and writing skills throughout the college services area.
Dimension:
This position is expected to demonstrate best practices in education, instruction, and exercise good judgment as it relates to participants’ education in the classroom, student assessment, evaluation, and curriculum development. The incumbent must be able to manage working in a fast-paced environment, year-round programming, be flexible with change, and be able to deliver instruction to various levels of learners. This position is part of a team that must be able to work together with other areas to ensure that the program, division, and the college fulfills its annual goals, performance and outcomes.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The person in this position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but may serve as a formal work group leader for assigned staff, instructors, and students.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education with a current and valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate.
- Three (3) years of professional experience in education; adult education and/or K-12.
- Must possess good organizational skills and be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to appropriately use standard office productivity software and tools such as Google Suite, MS Office Suite (Powerpoint,Word and Excel).
- Strong customer service skills to effectively address the needs of students, customers, faculty, staff and the general public.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality on all information regarding student, staff, and faculty communications and personal information.
- Ability to work with accuracy with minimum supervision.
- Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Willing to take accountability for and ownership of work, job and office operations; dependable and reliable.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work situations that may include evening and weekend work assignments, and local/regional travel.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Master’s degree in related field from an accredited institution or an equivalent mix of related education and experience that demonstrates competency requirements for this position.
- Certification in elementary or secondary education in Reading.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with strong oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with curriculum development, alignment and integration and outcomes assessment.
- Experience and interest in alternative instructional methods, including innovative use of technology for learning and instruction
- Experience with adult education assessments (Comprehension Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), Testing Adult Basic Education (TABE), and General Equivalent Diploma (GED Testing).
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Must be able to work at a desk for long periods of time and operate a computer workstation and telephone.
- Must be able to communicate both in person and over the telephone with a variety of people each day.
- Occasionally carries and moves light loads up to (25 lbs.)
- The minimum reasoning skills necessary for this position include the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization does not exist.
Work Schedule
In addition to regular business hours, the person in this position must be able to be flexible around the needs of the department, which includes evening and/or weekend hours.
