Introduction
The position is administered by the office of Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs, at Kapi‘olani Community College. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) is charged with administrative control for planning and administering all programs and services within the Student Affairs units. The specific functions of this organizational unit include outreach and admissions, financial aid, graduation and transcript evaluations, credit and non-credit registration, student engagement, student counseling for specific and targeted populations, student grievances and complaints, instructional services for developmental education course offerings, and related learning support services.

The role entails providing essential support to support Native Hawaiian Student Success at Kapi‘olani Community College within the Student Affairs units. Reporting to VCSA, the Native Hawaiian Student Success Counselor/Coordinator is responsible for coordinating services and counseling to Native Hawaiian students at Kapi‘olani Community College.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and grow, a support program that provides culturally appropriate, value-based counseling services including working with Native Hawaiian students in developing degree pathways and academic plans.
  • Provide academic, transfer, career, and life planning, and personal/social issues and other student support services to improve Native Hawaiian student engagement, learning, development, retention, and achievement/success.
  • Coordinate and provide counseling services in modes to best support student learning (including but not limited to, individual and group sessions, classroom presentations, email, phone, web, etc.); utilize technology to provide Native Hawaiian student support services.
  • Secure, implement and manage extramural grants, including but not limited to, Kulia ma Kapi‘olani, in support of Native Hawaiian student success.
  • Collect and utilize data to develop and implement an outcomes-based assessment of the progress of Native Hawaiian students and to strategically develop targeted interventions that meet the needs of Native Hawaiian students.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff from other units to create partnerships for seamless delivery of specialized counseling activities and other support services for Native Hawaiian students.
  • Participate in outreach, orientation, and registration activities, especially to increase enrollment in targeted programs where Native Hawaiians are underrepresented
  • Engage in University of Hawai‘i System initiatives related to Native Hawaiian student success and support.
  • Participate in the initiation, implementation, assessment, and improvement of counseling programs/strategies to support Native Hawaiian student engagement, learning, and achievement/success across various programs at Kapi‘olani Community College.
  • Develop and implement culturally appropriate, values-based co-curricular activities and programs.
  • Promote and coordinate community partnerships to increase resources and internship opportunities for Native Hawaiian student success.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise support personnel for the Kapo‘oloku and Kulia ma Kapi‘olani programs, including but not limited to staff, student workers, and/or peer mentors.
  • Perform related professional duties including:
    • Contribute to the growth and development of the counseling discipline and college through committee work and other college-related activities
    • Engage in public service related to one's professional status or expertise
    • Engage in ongoing professional development activities
    • Engage in professional or scholarly activities related to advancing Native Hawaiian student engagement, learning, and achievement/success.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Counseling Psychology, College Student Personnel Services, Human Resources (to include CTAHR and Personnel), Communications or related fields*, OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling and Guidance, Counseling Psychology, College Student Personnel Services, Human Resources (to include CTAHR and Personnel), Communications or related fields* and 3 years related work experience.

*Note: Related fields include: Education (to include all degrees in this field), Family Resources, Human Development, Psychology (to include all degrees in this field), Public Health, Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Work, Sociology, and Student Services Personnel

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge and/or experience in counseling (community) college students in the areas of academic, transfer, career and life planning, admission, orientation, and personal/social issues, including but not limited to financial aid, literacy and basic needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from diverse socioeconomic and multicultural backgrounds and students with learning and other disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team; ability to initiate, implement, and assess, counseling strategies, projects, and activities to promote student learning/ development, retention, and success.
  • Experience supervising and managing a diverse team, including both student leaders and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology to provide and improve student support services and to conduct related professional activities
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively handle a wide range of counseling functions independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff and to maintain effective working relationships; and leadership, managerial, or coordination experience in a post-secondary setting.
  • Three (3) years experience with applying for, managing and implementing extramural grants
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Kapi?olani Community College with its open-door and multicultural populations
  • Twelve credits in Hawaiian Studies/Language and basic proficiency in Hawaiian language
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in providing counseling, academic/career planning and/or teaching Native Hawaiians at the post-secondary level
  • Three (3) years of experience in project management or coordination with a demonstrated ability to manage and do administrative work
  • Advocacy work within the Hawaiian community or other demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of this community
  • Considerable knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture, language, history, educational programs, issues and resources
  • Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College’s vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai‘i and the world.
