About the Department

Lake Wheeler Road Field Lab is a 1,800 acre teaching and research farm that supports over 30 different units (beef, dairy, chicken, turkey, swine horse, goat, fish, feed mill, crops, turf, horticulture, and others). Part of that support includes providing water to the units; providing support in making repairs and making physical modification at the units in support of new research.

Essential Job Duties

The position of Facilities Maintenance Tech is needed to make repairs and improvement at the various units at Lake Wheeler Road Field Lab in addition to preventive maintenance and service. The position will be required to work on many different systems including plumbing, electrical, HVAC in addition to minor carpentry work.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must have a working knowledge of the duties required in the trade fields.
  • Must be able to climb and work on roofs or in a fork lift basket.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 to 90 pounds occasionally.
  • Strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the trade fields, prefer electrical and/ or plumbing experience.
  • Ability to operate a backhoe, trencher, forklift and dump truck.
  • Experience in building or renovations.
  • Experience in installation of electrical wiring and components.
  • Ability to assist in the planning phase of materials and suppliers needed to start a project.
  • Ability to complete whatever task is assigned.

Required License or Certification

  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date.
