DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Advanced Practice Provider Supervisor at the UCSD Department of Psychiatry, and in consultation with the Community Psychiatry Program Director, and the psychiatrist staff at UCSD Department of Psychiatry, the incumbent will provide specialized mental health care services in an outpatient, community mental health clinic and UCSD outpatient psychiatric setting. Incumbent will evaluate and manage psychiatric disorders, conduct in-depth interviews with patients, construct comprehensive medical histories, and perform initial and periodic physical examinations. The incumbent will also coordinate follow-up care, referrals, and case management; will perform crisis intervention and medication management; and will develop long- and short-range treatment plans. The primary population served by this position is pediatric, child, adolescent, transitional aged youth, and families. Incumbent must also be able to provide services to full lifespan ages of patients.

This position may include overseeing and training nurse practitioner students and fellows. The incumbent will provide both direct patient care and will provide training, education, and oversee trainees. The incumbent will also consult and coordinate care with other medical and psychologist staff and outside agencies; serve as a resource in evaluation and management of psychiatric disorders for primary care staff.

This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification (PMHNP).

  • Valid DEA license, and/or ability to furnish upon hire.

  • Certified by the County to place patients on legal holds (e.g. 5150, 5250). Must pass 5150 examination and be certified by the county as a 5150 designee.

  • Current BART certification, or BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Minimum six (6) months of licensed Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner work experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychiatric principles, practices, and process gained through extended clinical study and experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing psychiatric medications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of psychiatric models of care with emphasis on interdisciplinary team approach.

  • Demonstrated skill in management of health-illness needs in primary health care. Knowledge and skill in assessment and treatment of common acute illnesses and injuries.

  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of community agencies most frequently used in mental health care.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to discuss difficult issues with sensitivity and tact.

  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Demonstrated skill in management of health-illness needs in primary health care. Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in conducting a health history and performing a physical examination with a proven ability to distinguish between normal and abnormal patient assessment findings. Demonstrated skill in interpretation of laboratory data and demonstrated knowledge and skill in assessment and treatment of common acute illnesses and injuries.

  • Demonstrated skill in interviewing and counseling.

  • Proven ability to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and effectively on a walk-in or appointment basis, within set time limits.

  • Proven ability to work with trainees of various disciplines.

  • Demonstrated experience treating pediatric, child, and adolescent patient populations in behavioral health settings.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a variety of child and adolescent psychiatric settings throughout San Diego community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced post-graduate PMHNP fellowship program completion.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be familiar with San Diego County's Mental Health System and Care Delivery Model.
  • Should be able to oversee NP students and NP fellows and be familiar with psychiatric NP training curriculum.
  • Certified by the County to place patients on legal holds (e.g. 5150, 5250).
  • Must be able to provide services to full lifespan ages of patients, with focus on pediatric, child, adolescent, transitional aged youth, and families.
  • Must be available to work a regular Monday to Friday work schedule consisting of 8-hour day shifts at variable locations.
  • Must be available to work four 10-hour shifts if needed. The work schedule (days and hours) may change in the future based on departmental needs.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work at multiple locations at UCSD outpatient sites and multiple community clinics/organizations, Hillcrest Medical Center, Jacobs Medical Center and/or outpatient sites, potentially moving between locations on a daily or weekly basis to meet NP cross-coverage and Departmental needs.
  • Must be able to work overtime, weekends, evenings, and/or holidays as needed.
  • Must have available transportation and ability to commute between Hillcrest Medical Center, Jacobs Medical Center, and other Psychiatry clinical sites as needed.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.
  • Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $158,187 - $221,370 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $75.76 - $106.02

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
