Summary of Position

Under the supervision of the Manager of the Macfarlane Research Greenhouses, the Greenhouse Operations Specialist will participate in and oversee day-to-day tasks of the research facility to ensure the success of ongoing research projects. This position is responsible for ensuring that research projects and greenhouse facility spaces are properly operated. The operations specialist will also aid the manager in maintaining operations and financial records for sustainably operating the greenhouse facility. The operations specialist will be required to supervise student workers and coordinate with other greenhouse personnel to ensure help is acquired when necessary. The operations specialist will also be expected to regularly attend (in-person or remotely) professional development opportunities to maintain best management practices, knowledge, and pesticide licensure. The operations specialist will supervise employees and fully manage greenhouse and budget operations in the absence of the Manager.

Other minimum qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Environmental Horticulture or related field.
  2. 2 or more years of experience in greenhouse management or production and 1 or more years of supervisory experience.
  3. Ability to operate, maintain, and perform basic repairs to greenhouse machinery and equipment.
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong data management and computer skills (documentation, supply ordering, etc). Ability to effectively handle multiple projects with efficiency.
  5. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform the duties of the job, including heavy lifting, stand for long periods of time, and work in a warm environment (90+ degrees in the summer months).
  6. Must be able to wear, use, and instruct how to use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  7. NH private pesticide applicators license or the ability to obtain a pesticide applicators license within the first 6 months of employment.
  8. Experience with Integrated Pest Management, basic soil testing techniques (pH/EC), plant fertility management, plant propagation, young plant production.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  1. Plumbing and basic electrical skills.
  2. Experience with growth chambers.
  3. Ability to effectively create signage and posters in a digital format.
  4. Experience supporting academic and research agriculture projects with an ability to support learning and inquiry.

Duty/Responsibility

Perform tasks that are required for successfully managing multiple research projects within the Macfarlane Research Greenhouses. Duties include irrigation management, pest management, nutrition management, and maintenance of infrastructure required to maintain controlled environment plant research in the facility.

Duty/Responsibility

Maintain operational stability by setting up and maintaining an accurate inventory management system for all research and facility support materials. Assist greenhouse manager in all purchasing responsibilities and accurate expense tracking.

Duty/Responsibility

Lead supervision, training, and task scheduling of student workers to ensure timely, efficient, and cost-effective completion of greenhouse operations and equipment maintenance. Serve in place of Manager when needed.

Duty/Responsibility

Ensure operational sustainability through maintaining, assessing, and using operations information and data to advise the manager on current operational conditions and future facility improvements.

Duty/Responsibility

Coordinate with research faculty, graduate students, and NHAES Communications department to effectively communicate the status of ongoing projects, to facility visitors, by means of signage, posters, pamphlets, and promotional material.
