Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Special Events Coordinator will be responsible for the planning and implementation of dozens of annual and ad hoc events hosted by the Department of Computer Science. As a member of the External Relations team, this position has primary responsibility for high-profile events including, but not limited to, Career Fairs, Research Day, Grad Visit Day, Graduation Reception, High School Programming Contest and Maryland Day.

The Special Events Coordinator follows a customer-focused approach in assuming leadership or providing support, as appropriate, for Department events and other events in the Brendan Iribe Center. The Special Events Coordinator collaborates with other staff, faculty, or students in the Department and the University in a flexible manner depending on the nature of each event.

Additional responsibilities include scheduling event space for the Iribe Center and external relations events on Google calendars. This position is also responsible for giving tours of the Iribe Center to individuals or groups who may be interested in holding events in the building. This position will need to effectively manage relationships with campus colleagues, student leaders, volunteers, corporate partners, and external vendors.

Must be willing to work evening and weekend hours as needed by the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.

Experience:

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in event management, student activities, program administration, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience in supervising students and volunteers.
  • Outstanding customer service skills with a keen eye on managing successful events that make the organization shine.
  •  Exceptional management skills and the ability to operate efficiently and effectively in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and commitment to collaborative teamwork as well as ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to take initiative.
  • Strong computer skills required including Microsoft Office, especially Excel, and Google suite.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty and staff.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Event Planning Certificate.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Knowledge of UMD policies and procedures related to holding events on campus.
  • Career fair management experience.
  • Previous experience working with a high volume of events.

Additional Information:

Salary range $60,000-$70,000.

Physical Demands

  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including printer and copy machine. 
  • Substantive repetitive movements (motions) on the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. 
  • Must have the ability to walk short distances, lift and carry parcels, packages and other items, and maneuver around the campus and/or drive a vehicle to travel to event locations and/or pickup items from store needed for events. 
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
