A postdoctoral position in Dr. Matthews’ laboratory in the Department of Medicine/Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is available. Dr. Matthews’ research is focused on HIV-prevention in the context of sexual and reproductive health among men and women in Alabama, Uganda, and South Africa. Dr. Matthews uses mixed-methods, implementation science, and epidemiologic approaches to evaluate HIV testing patterns and PrEP use among adolescent girls and young women across Alabama, PrEP use among women planning for and with pregnancy in South Africa and Uganda, and ART uptake, viral suppression and care engagement for men in sub-Saharan Africa.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in epidemiology, maternal-child health, or related field with a strong background in human subjects research, sexual and reproductive health, HIV, and qualitative and/or quantitative analysis. Strong communication and writing skills are required. Opportunities to spend time abroad will depend on candidate interests, goals, and the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The ideal candidate would be willing to move to Birmingham for the position but other situations will be considered given the COVID-19 pandemic and the global health focus of the work
The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
- Project Management
- Supporting the development of data collection tools (questionnaires, interview guides)
- Qualitative data collection
- Analysis of existing qualitative and quantitative data
- Leading and supporting manuscript writing
- Leading and supporting grant proposal development and writing
- Experience in HIV/AIDS programs and services is highly desirable
- Experience in maternal-child health, sexual and reproductive health is desirable
- Experience working in international research collaborations is desirable
Ample opportunities for professional development, mentorship, academic and research leadership, publication, and applied knowledge translation will be provided through the interdisciplinary training environment in the UAB School of Medicine and Division of Infectious Disease. Dr. Matthews collaborates closely with UAB and other U.S., Canadian, Ugandan, South African partners with expertise in qualitative methods, epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral psychology.
The ideal start date is May 1, 2021, though later start dates will be considered.
