Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of this position The Professional Nurse provides occupational health and medical care under the University Medical Surveillance Program and Workers’ Compensation Program to all full-time, part-time, and temporary University employees. Examples of specific duties include: first care for employee occupational injury/illness, medical surveillance examination in accordance with OSHA, CDC, and NIH, travel immunizations, and perform respiratory quantitative fit-testing using in accordance with NC OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard.

All University employees are included in the University’s workers’ compensation program.The position may develop nursing care plans based on diagnosis and pertinent medical information, patient and family needs, and patient-care problems; independently carry out nursing care process and set up an environment to assist patients in obtaining maximum level of functioning or recovery. The position may also provide primary, preventive and rehabilitative care to individuals. The position may also be responsible for serving as a “charge nurse,” overseeing the daily nursing care activities on an assigned shift for one unit, or in a preceptor role, coordinating all licensed and non-licensed staff training.

The position is also responsible for maintaining information in a comprehensive database

Other Work/Responsibilities

Knowledge – Knowledge of nursing theories, practices, and standards of care. Licensed by NC Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse.

Program Monitoring and Administration – Ability to assess, monitor, and recommend occupational health protocol needs.
Ability to document compliance with state and federal regulations.

Training and Education – Ability to educate and train employees in occupational health and specific University requirements. Ability to assess, develop, design, implement, and provide consulting services for occupational health.

Safety and Health Compliance :Ability to understand applicable policies and procedures, and provide appropriate occupational health services.

Communication – Ability to interpret and communicate information to individuals or groups. Ability to clearly and concisely

Client/Customer Service: Ability to work as a team player with multi- disciplinary healthcare staff, facility and custody staff. Ability to deliver services in an organized, timely and methodical manner. Ability to notify patient/client of how to access
healthcare.

Coaching/Mentoring: Ability to effectively teach nursing staff through orientation and on-the-job training. Ability to precept subordinate staff on patient care and daily routines. Ability to provide support and assistance to peers/co-workers.

Communication: Ability to use interview techniques that assist the patient/client in describing his/her symptoms and assist in discerning the situation, using an organizational approach. Ability to communicate information to patients, families and staff in a concise and descriptive manner, verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.

Work includes conducting needs assessments; developing, implementing and evaluating treatment plans; and providing patient care and education through case management. Professional Nurses are responsible for appropriate treatment and medical documentation; and may supervise subordinate staff. The position may develop nursing care plans based on diagnosis and pertinent medical information, patient and family needs, and patient-care problems; independently carry out nursing care process and set up an environment to assist patients in obtaining maximum level of functioning or recovery. The position may also provide primary, preventive and rehabilitative care to individuals. The position may also be responsible for serving as a “charge nurse,” overseeing the daily nursing care activities on an assigned shift for one unit, or in a preceptor role, coordinating all licensed and non-licensed staff training.



Minimum Experience/Education

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
