Salary Range

Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows: Lab Course - $75.48 up to $103.03 per hour. Lecture Course - $87.88 up to $118.85.

Cañada College is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is designated as both a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), enrolling approximately 10,000 students each academic year. The Position

The Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Cheer. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Reporting to the Athletic Director, the Head Cheer Coach is a part-time faculty position in the Athletic Department. The assignment entails coaching the Varsity Cheer team and all aspects related to the Cheer program. Assignment of off-season conditioning and team courses based on applicant meeting minimum qualifications or equivalency in Varsity.

This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. The District maintains a “pool” of applications for positions that are needed on an ongoing basis at Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College. The advantage of “pool” positions is when a position becomes available, the Dean may immediately begin screening applications from the available pool of applicants without having to post a position and wait while the position is being advertised. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Coach and administer all aspects of the collegiate Cheer program
  2. Select, train, and supervise assistant coaching and game operations staff
  3. Motivate and guide student-athletes to achieve academic success and assist in their matriculation to the four-year level and/or in meeting their vocational training goals
  4. Evaluate, plan, and coordinate all programs relevant to the success of student-athletes in the Cheer program
  5. Oversee preparation of the schedule
  6. Monitor and stay within the assigned budget
  7. Engage in approved fundraising activities to supplement the program budget
  8. Assist in the identification, procurement, and inventory of supplies and equipment for the Cheer program
  9. Ensure all facilities and modes of transportation are used safely and maintained properly
  10. Promote the Cheer program within the community and our contiguous recruiting areas through recruiting, public appearances, promotional efforts, community service, camps, clinics, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of any bachelor’s degree or higher and two years of professional experience OR any associate degree and six years of professional experience OR the equivalent (see below). The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment.
  • Experience coaching Cheer at the youth, club, high school, community college, or four-year college level
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and collaborate with the Dean, Administrative Assistant, Athletic Trainers, Instructional Aide, and all colleagues on campus to support students and develop a strong Cheer program
  • Ability to mentor students effectively and be a role model in terms of behavior, decorum, and ethics
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License or ability to obtain one

 

Equivalence to Minimum Qualifications

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

  1. Successful experience in coaching at the club level or higher

  3. Demonstrated ability in managing the various aspects of a Cheer program, including, but, not limited to, academic advisement, budget, coaching, compliance, evaluation, facilities, fundraising, marketing, operations, scheduling, and student support
  4. Ability to plan and direct the conditioning, training, practice, match, and behavioral conduct of all student-athletes in the program
  5. Demonstrated ability to coach, develop, and promote an collegiate Cheer program
  6. Evidence of continued professional development or involvement in Cheer
  7. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
  8. Ability to communicate effectively with all people, including persons from diverse cultures and language groups and people who have disabilities
  9. Ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment
  10. Ability, interest, and willingness to develop and maintain working relationships with club, high school, and four-year coaches so as to recruit, retain, and matriculate student-athletes
