Associate Professor of Public Administration
Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah
Date Posted 03/16/2021
Faculty-Liberal Arts-Public Administration & Policy
Employment Type Fulltime
Application Deadline Open until filled

The Department of Political Science & Criminal Justice at Southern Utah University (SUU) seeks candidates for an Associate Professor in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program beginning Fall 2021, pending budgetary approval. The ideal candidate will be a key leader on the MPA faculty team, while also serving as MPA Program Director for a period of time. This candidate will also have the ability to contribute broadly to the graduate program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Though all MPA faculty members share responsibility for the maintenance of the graduate program, the graduate Program Director plays a critical role in coordinating administrative functions related to the MPA program. This includes:

  • Reviewing student applications for admission to the MPA graduate program;

  • Scheduling MPA courses and monitoring class enrollments;

  • Recruiting adjunct instructors for the program;

  • Assigning course assessments and completing program assessments;

  • Collaborating with the Graduate Coordinator to ensure students receive excellent advising;

  • Recommending curriculum changes to the program;

  • Revising programmatic assessment plans;

  • Serve as the point of contact for re-accreditation efforts, i.e. the NASPAA principal representative;

  • Assisting with student recruitment and outreach;

  • Aligning the programs actions with the established program mission and strategic plan;

  • Communicating programmatic changes or updates to students, faculty, and advisory board

The Director will also be responsible for preparing annual reports and special reports to the Network of Schools of Public Policy Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). Our NASPAA-accredited MPA program provides an engaged learning environment emphasizing both practical and theoretical concepts of public administration. SUU is a leader in experiential learning, and the MPA program encourages high-impact learning practices throughout the curriculum.

The tenure-track position carries a 4-4 teaching load (reduced to 3-3 if also serving the role as Program Director and program enrollment meets University requirements). Faculty are expected to engage in scholarly pursuits and contribute to service obligations within the University. The preferred candidate will demonstrate a strong record of scholarly achievement, quality instruction, and applied research activities in political science, public administration, or related fields commensurate with an associate professor position. Successful candidates must also demonstrate experience in, or potential for, service relevant to the university, the profession, and the community. Candidates may also exhibit relevant previous in-field public administration experience.

Because the candidate is expected to help develop and deliver courses within the MPA program, the ability to teach general courses in public administration is essential. MPA courses are offered face-to-face and online; the candidate will be expected to teach courses in a variety of modalities. Teaching experience at the university level is required; experience teaching online is preferred.

Competitive candidates will have experience coordinating a NASPAA-accredited MPA program or comparable leadership roles. Expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the public sector will also be viewed highly favorably. The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience in leading a team of faculty members toward meeting determined strategic goals and mission.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Doctorate in Political Science, Public Administration (PhD or DPA), or closely related field.
  • 3 years experience teaching within an MPA program, or closely related field.
  • Experience teaching in an online setting preferred.

The MPA program is committed to equity and inclusion; candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

  • Statement of Teaching Philosophy

  • Statement of Research Philosophy

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation

  • Contact Information for at least 3 Professional References
