Student Media is a department of NC State University’s Division of Academic and Student Affairs. It supports NC State’s six student-run media outlets – two student newspapers, a student radio station, a yearbook, a literary magazine and a general interest magazine – who are in turn governed by the Student Media Board of Directors, which includes student leaders, faculty, program alumni and local media professionals. As a public forum for free expression, the student media at North Carolina State University exist to inform and to entertain, first and foremost, NC State students followed by members of the surrounding community and peers in the journalism profession. Working in student media gives participants hands-on experience in the mass media which will assist them regardless of their career goals. By upholding the highest standards of journalistic ethics, the student-run media will help students become competent as ethical and responsible adults, who are enthusiastic about their future involvement in human affairs and optimistic about their future.

Essential Job Duties

The Business and Marketing Manager is responsible for the maximization of revenues from advertising sales, merchandise sales and service fees totaling more than $250,000 per year, an amount that accounts for about one-fourth of Student Media’s annual operating budget. 

To that end, this position is responsible for leading and coordinating all training of student media consultants (i.e., serving as the primary adviser to Student Media’s student Business and Marketing Office staff), working directly with local, campus and regional advertising and marketing clients, and overseeing the associated accounts receivable.

Other Responsibilities

Works with other full-time staff advisers and individual student leaders as appropriate to ensure adequate office staffing throughout Student Media’s established hours of operation.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including proofreading
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in sales and marketing in a higher education environment and/or prior experience in media sales preferred.
