The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) Development Office raises funds from alumni, friends, and clients of our Veterinary Hospitals, corporate partners, private and public foundations and many other sources.

The College is also supported by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation, Inc. which is a private 501c3 non-profit organization which operates exclusively for educational and scientific purposes, providing assistance to help support educational activities, maintain a prominent faculty, encourage diverse research and facilitate cooperative interactions with other disciplines and institutions.

Essential Job Duties

The Assistant Dean for Development reports directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Associate Vice Chancellor of University Advancement. The Assistant Dean is the college’s chief fundraising and engagement leader and will be responsible for managing the college advancement team and working closely with the Dean on strategic relationships and vision for Advancement. The Assistant Dean is responsible for sustaining and strategically planning growth in fundraising results in collaboration with university partners and in alignment with industry best practices. The Assistant Dean is expected to work closely with the Dean and any campaign committee, oversee their effective use in assignments, solicitation and stewardship for the campaign and heighten the role of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation, Inc. in the campaign.

The incumbent will work closely with University Advancement and the Dean in the areas of program growth, organizational alignment, and program effectiveness; closely collaborating in the areas of recruitment and retention, performance management and assessment, professional development, and performance standards. Partners with Assistant Vice Chancellor for Principal Gifts in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement to foster the largest gifts to the college and/or the university. A robust knowledge of strategic fundraising and hospital-based philanthropy is required. The Assistant Dean will lead and administer a team that includes Major Gifts Officers, Leadership Annual Giving Officers, and a small administrative staff. Our Advancement team works in close partnership with our clinical faculty, researchers and leadership, and interacts extensively with our animal-owning clients.

Duties of the successful incumbent for this role include:
  • In partnership with the Dean, coordinating the complete range of development activities related to the CVM including planning, managing and implementing an annual operating plan and budget designed to attain the development goals and objectives of the college and the foundation within available resources.
  • Assisting the Dean in all aspects of fundraising for the College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Recommending, determining and implementing the strategies, relationships, and activities that will maximize the College’s development capacity and outcomes, including preparing and implementing of a comprehensive major gift program that generates individual and corporate donors and other philanthropic support on a continuing basis to achieve goals of the college.
  • Proposing and leading the approved strategic initiatives to identify, qualify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward donors and prospects as well as collaborate with and support volunteers and other leaders in their related fundraising efforts
  • Providing innovative leadership, oversight, and strategic direction to a staff of development professionals as well as implement strategies to grow and enhance the effectiveness of the development operation in the college while managing a focused prospect portfolio of leadership and principal gift level prospects.
  • Collaborating and serving as senior advisor to the Dean as well as college leadership to develop annual fundraising goals and plans, monitor progress against goals, and produce reports on progress. Collaborating with members and leaders of the Advancement team that include the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Director of Continuing Education and Outreach (which is home to the CVM Alumni Society), College leadership, and faculty to strengthen the philanthropic foundation of the College.
  • Regularly travel with the Dean to meet with alumni, friends, corporations and foundations to secure philanthropic resources for the college.
  • Setting policy, procedures, and best practices for the college’s advancement program.
  • Maintaining a positive working relationship, collaborating and consulting with the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement for coordination of resources, services and access to the Chancellor for Advancement purposes.
  • Managing team to university performance standards and collaborating with university partners to build and maintain a major gifts pipeline
  • Sustaining increased involvement of the Board of Directors and managing board committees including advocacy, college relations, development, audit, finance and nominations, orientation, and recognition. Facilitating meetings with NC Veterinary Medical Foundation Board.
  • Managing fundraising efforts using best practices and with accountability and transparency
  • Building and managing staff capacity by ensuring professional development of the development team.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience is required.
  • At least 5-10 years of progressively responsible experience in major gift fundraising and a robust knowledge of grateful patient/client programs and hospital based philanthropy is required.
  • Experience with developing and successful implementation of fund-raising strategies.
  • Experience managing professional development staff.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Ability to meet and interact with top donors/prospects and with top corporate officials.
  • Be available for frequent travel.
  • Must be able to set priorities and manage multiple tasks.
  • A self-starter who can thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to foster an environment that is supportive and welcoming of all groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree is preferred along with at least eight years in fund raising at a research university, academic medical center, or research institute.
  • Experience at public, land-grant institutions.
  • Previous campaign experience is preferable along with a strong knowledge of all aspects of corporate/foundation, individual and planned giving.
  • Experience in developing major gift strategies.
  • Experience working in a major university setting.
