About the Department

DELTA’s role within the Office of the Provost is to advance the integration and support of learning technologies in NC State’s academic programs and courses, both on campus and at a distance. DELTA supports distance-based credit programs and courses for the university, and provides enterprise academic technology and instructional support services for all modes of course delivery. Working with NC State instructors and partners, DELTA leads the way in designing, creating, implementing and supporting extraordinary digital learning experiences for our community of learners. DELTA applies expertise in technologies and pedagogies to create and nurture innovative, effective and impactful digital learning experiences for our community of instructors and learners with a collaborative, service-oriented and innovative mindset.

Essential Job Duties

The Instructional Designer reports to the Director for Instructional Design & Development and is part of the Instructional Design team within Digital Learning. The Instructional Design team provides leadership in the area of research-based instructional design, including the creation of engaging and effective learning materials and activities, the development of assessment techniques, and the pedagogical design of learning technology solutions. The team provides consultation and course-creation services to the University as a whole as well as within DELTA itself.

The production environment for this position is collaborative and team-oriented. This position works closely with faculty, media developers, project coordinators, and other instructional professionals to design and develop courses and learning tools that build on effective practices and meet the unique needs of each project. The Instructional Designer works within the ID team and across groups to share and build professional and institutional knowledge, actively helps to streamline processes to create efficiencies, and represents DELTA on campus, locally, and nationally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Designs and develops effective courses, including web content, interactive exercises, assessments, and online communication mechanisms in collaboration with faculty, multimedia specialists, instructional designers, and other instructional professionals. This is achieved through researching, brainstorming, developing, implementing and evaluating innovative and pedagogically sound solutions to instructional challenges.
  • Provides leadership and project management for assigned course production projects including Online and Distance Education course development and enhancement, blended/hybrid learning design, and instructional tool and template creation.
  • Provides instructional design expertise for online and blended/hybrid course development.
  • Partners with DELTA colleagues, faculty and other content experts in researching, brainstorming, developing, implementing and evaluating innovative and pedagogically sound solutions for addressing instructional challenges.
  • Builds positive cross-unit and cross-campus working relationships to regularly and purposely push forward DELTA’s strategic goals.
  • Consult with faculty on needs assessment, course redesign, and evaluation of the effectiveness of technologies and techniques in the teaching and learning process.
  • Guides faculty members in the analysis, design, and development, implementation and evaluation of effective courses and instructional programs.
  • Applies and assists in the dissemination of research-based principles and standards for quality online, face-to-face, and blended course design.
  • Gathers and reports on evidence of the impact of instructional innovations on student success, course and departmental efficiency, the furtherance of University, College, Departmental, and DELTA strategic goals.

Other Responsibilities

  • Researches and keeps abreast of trends in the areas of instructional design, teaching and learning with technology, distance education, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Contributes to outreach initiatives by assisting with consultations, presentations, and workshops to faculty and staff, and participating in online discussions and conferences.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in education, design, technology or a related field

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience designing and producing online course materials such as instructional websites, digital graphics, online resources, and other digital course materials.
  • Experience in managing individual projects including prioritizing work to meet timelines and milestones.
  • Experience in using and developing content for online course management systems (e.g. Moodle, Canvas, etc.).
  • Experience in using an array of instructional technologies including hardware and software, multimedia technologies, e-learning authoring software, distributed/distance learning techniques, and tools that aid in creating learning activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills (including written and presentational).
  • Ability to establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.
  • Ability to work in a team production environment and multidisciplinary design process.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.
  • High level of independence and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with the Quality Matters (QM) Higher Education Rubric including; course certifications, certified peer reviewer, and QM workshop facilitator.
  • Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design.
  • Two years of experience working with faculty in a higher education setting or SMEs in a commercial setting
  • Experience in designing and developing complete distance education courses using distributed / distance technologies either individually or in collaboration with others.
  • Experience with blended/hybrid learning design and large-course redesign approaches.
  • Demonstrated success in the development of instructional multimedia.
  • Proficiency in using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment.
