MAMS Seminar Assistant

Job Description

Johns Hopkins University’s (JHU) Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Museum Studies program is seeking a Seminar Assistant (SA). The JHU seminar assistant (SA) will assist in developing and executing the required on-ground seminar experience in close collaboration with the faculty of record and according to guidelines set by JHU for the M.A. in Museum Studies program. The onsite portion of the seminar will take place over ten business days, during two consecutive weeks, in Pittsburgh, PA. There will be some pre-seminar and post-seminar responsibilities that fall within the scope of the respective semesters.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist the faculty leader in duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to creating course content, lectures, logistics, coordinating student thank you notes, and assisting in establishing venues as vendors to facilitate payment.
  • Communicate regularly with the faculty of record to ensure the seminar meets student expectations and course learning objectives before, during, and after the seminar.
  • Contribute professional contacts and relationships to facilitate student access to museum professionals within the host city.
  • Participate as required in all seminar activities as the assistant to the faculty of record, ensuring the seminar runs as smoothly and productively as possible. This may require thinking fast on your feet and making last-minute changes to the established program.
  • Facilitate class discussions as required around relevant seminar coursework.
  • Work with student groups on project work as required to enhance the learning process, including meeting with teams and working through drafts.
  • Assist in supporting and assessing student progress (including grading) as required to facilitate the appropriate scaffolding of feedback during the onsite portion of the seminar experience.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Some experience as a graduate student in the related area of support.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Museum Studies or a related field such as Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Folklife, History, Historic Preservation, Heritage Studies, or Public History
  • Four plus years of work experience within the museum sector
  • Highly knowledgeable about the Heritage field
  • Excellent at oral and written communication
  • Organized and good at time management
  • Attentive to details
  • Thoughtful about interacting with people from diverse backgrounds


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the host city and its museum community.


Physical Requirements

  • The seminar will require significant walking (average of 1-2 miles a day; some days more) over the two-week field courses.

Starting Salary Range: $19.50 - $35.00 hourly ($22.00 targeted; commensurate with experience)
