The Ohio State University’s Chief of Police provides collaborative leadership to the Police Division that protects, serves and supports the campus community as part of the Department of Public Safety. The Chief provides direction and coordination of the Police Division's activities involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of statutes and university regulations and investigation of accidents and criminal acts.

 

Under the administrative direction of the Associate Vice President, Public Safety, the Chief of Police provides leadership, long and short-term guidance and direction to the staff in the Police Division. Extensive experience with the principals of modern crime prevention, knowledge of criminal investigative techniques and rules of evidence will serve the successful candidate well in this position. Oversight of the Police Division’s budget is another key component of the role.

 

Responsibilities include administration of policies and procedures for the Police Division to provide optimum levels of safety and security for the university community. This includes ensuring that policies and procedures reflect new case law, legislation, and trends in campus public safety, and that they are consistent with CALEA standards. Also develops and implements highly effective crime prevention policies, procedures and strategies, homeland security and emergency response protocols to enhance safety and security.

 

The Chief of Police represents the Police Division through various means of engagement to develop and maintain partnerships with key stakeholder groups and ensure constant feedback is received from the university community. Engagement and outreach includes handling media inquiries and providing information to executive leadership, the Board of Trustees, university departments, media, and other interested community members.

 

This role is subject to 24-hour call-in and requires working a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends. Please note that the Chief of Police is required to work all home football games.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in criminology, criminal justice, social sciences, or related field.
  • Minimum 12 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience with substantial experience leading and managing in a law enforcement organization.
    Current peace officer certification required with the ability to obtain Ohio Peace Officer certification within 12 months of hire.
    Ability to obtain secret clearance to attend security briefings within 12 months of hire.
  • Ability to pass medical and psychological testing, background check (no conviction record for a felony or crime of moral turpitude or domestic violence), vision testing and obtain a valid Ohio driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • Completion of a leadership educational opportunity such as completing the FBINA, PELC, CLEE, SPI, or SPSC.
  • Knowledge of ICS and NIMS protocols and a basic understanding of Clery Act requirements.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in criminology, criminal justice, social sciences or related field.
  • Knowledge of CALEA accreditation process and requirements and knowledge of best practices in university policing.
  • Strategic or long-range planning experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of Ohio criminal law.
  • Experience with major event security planning

Additional Job Description:

The target hiring range for this job profile is $170,000 - $195,000. The offered salary will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
