The Dean of Health Sciences at the College of Southern Maryland plays a critical leadership role in advancing the academic and administrative functions within the Science and Health department. This position requires a dynamic and visionary leader who can collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to enhance the quality of education, foster innovation, and promote student success in the field of science and health. The Dean provides strategic leadership to the School of Science and Health to ensure that it reflects the mission and core values of the college: collaboration, equity, excellence, inclusivity, innovation, integrity, and respect.

Reporting to the Vice President of the Division of Learning, the Dean will join a team of highly committed colleagues who are dedicated to serving the students and the community while maintaining its successful student outcomes in an innovative state-of-the-art facility. The Dean represents Health Sciences to internal and external stakeholders and cultivates an open and responsive culture that invites feedback and new ideas. The Dean serves as an advocate for the School’s educational programs, providing leadership to faculty and staff to ensure consistent high-quality standards in curricula and programs that meet the needs of students and the region. The Dean oversees the academic integrity of Health Sciences and provides leadership in planning, budgeting, curriculum, program development and scheduling. The Dean oversees the hiring, support and professional development, scheduling, and evaluation of School faculty and staff. The Dean ensures compliance with various accrediting bodies as well as with Maryland and federal regulations.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The Dean is a complex position and has a broad range of duties:

40% Provide Leadership for the Academic School


  • Provide visionary leadership to School of Health Sciences, setting strategic goals and objectives in alignment with the college's mission.
  • Foster a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and revise curriculum, ensuring it meets industry standards and prepares students for future careers.
  • Lead efforts in planning within the guidelines of the Division of Learning.
  • Develop strategies and objectives for the school that align with the College's strategic plan.
  • Develop, maintain, and nurture key relationships with external stakeholders and community organizations.
  • Represent the College or School on statewide groups, with academic organizations, or in external meetings and events.
  • Advocate for the College or School in meetings with public officials or potential donors.
  • Ensure a student-centered focus by balancing College, School and community perspectives.
  • Represent the School in College meetings.
  • Serve on leadership groups, working collaboratively with other administrators, faculty, and staff to advance the goals of the School.
  • Make recommendations for the hiring of faculty and staff based on needs and functions of the School. Ensure compliance with institutional affirmative action plan, and assure that requirements are met for selection, salary placement, and employment.
  • Approve timesheets and requests for leave and professional development aided by Chairs as appropriate.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of School faculty and staff aided by and Chairs as appropriate.
  • Lead the evaluation of School programs and activities.
  • Remain active in professional organizations by attending and presenting at local, regional, and national conferences.
  • Analyze and interpret college policies and procedures for compliance and effective operations.
  • Provide direction on academic regulations and Code of Conduct matters.

40% Manage Academic Programs for the School
  • Respond to community and industry needs by leading the development of new programs.
  • Provide leadership in academic planning, curriculum and program development, program review, and outcomes assessment.
  • Provide oversight of program development and deletion, in conjunction with associate dean and chairs, and with school faculty.
  • Oversee production of materials or information to be included on the college website, catalogue, and other public areas.
  • Serve as resource person to other units of the college for the purpose of effective operation e.g., recommending materials for the library, coordinating remediation strategies associated with courses in the School, etc.
  • Lead the development of academic class schedules and make schedule management decisions using relevant data concerning class cancellations in conjunction with Chairs.
  • Oversee the staffing of academic classes and support for those faculty, e.g., textbooks, syllabi, supplies, orientation, etc.
  • Lead textbook and instructional material adoption and coordination with the bookstore for ordering adequate instructional supplies in conjunction with Chairs.
  • Lead assessment processes for the School.
  • Support quality instruction oversight done by associate dean, chairs and coordinators.
  • Inspire and encourage innovation in teaching and learning.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty within Health Sciences.
  • Support professional development opportunities for faculty to enhance teaching effectiveness and stay current with industry trends and advancements.
  • Encourage and facilitate research activities and scholarly contributions within the department.

20% Manage Administrative Responsibilities
  • Serve on the appropriate governance and academic councils and committees.
  • Manage college functions or initiatives as determined in collaboration with the Vice President
  • Manage budget and prepare budget requests/reports as appropriate.
  • Seek external funding opportunities through grants and partnerships to enhance departmental initiatives.
  • Authorize and supervise the expenditure of funds, e.g., approve equipment, supplies, travel, etc.
  • Provide support for initiatives of the college that may affect the operation of the college, e.g., Achieving the Dream, MSCHE or other accreditation activities, etc.
  • Be responsible for all equipment assigned to the school.
  • Recommend policies or change in policies that enhance the operation of the college.
  • Implement a program of continuous improvement.
  • Compile, interpret, and share data/information that can be used to increase the college's effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Assist in developing alternative sources of funding and provide oversight as appropriate.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Accreditation and Compliance:
  • Ensure that Health Sciences programs meet accreditation standards and comply with relevant regulations.
  • Collaborate with accreditation bodies and oversee the preparation of required reports and documentation.

Innovation and Technology Integration:
  • Promote the integration of innovative teaching methodologies and technology within the Health Sciences programs.
  • Stay informed about advancements in the field and incorporate relevant technologies into the curriculum.

Student Success:
  • Implement initiatives to enhance student recruitment, retention, and success within the Health Sciences programs.
  • Develop and support student engagement activities, internships, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with student services to address the unique needs of Health Sciences students.

Supervision:
The Dean of Health Sciences supervises the following positions:
  • Administrative Assistant
  • Lab Director
  • Chair, Nursing
  • Chair, Health
  • Clinical Placement Coordinator
  • Health Sciences Admission and Progressive Coordinator
  • Sim Operator and Technical Support Specialist

 

Minimum Education and Training

 

  • Master’s degree in one of the disciplines supervised, Doctorate preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting, preferably in a community college or similar institution.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience at a Chair or Associate Dean level
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience at two- or four-year colleges or universities

  • Experience in accreditation activities and learning outcomes assessment.
  • Experience with curriculum and program development
  • Strong organizational, collaborative, and management skills
  • Experience in successfully managing complex projects.
  • Ability to work effectively on a team to complete tasks and projects.
  • Demonstrated history of taking initiative and working independently; able to problem solve situations proactively.
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
