Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position reports to the Assistant Director, Network Engineering, within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at the University of Maryland, College Park, and performs in several key areas:
  • Independently and in collaboration with others, plan, design, and implement network infrastructure improvements and new capabilities. This may include stakeholders meetings, requirements identification, creating teams and teamwork as appropriate, and coordinating the workstreams.
  • Independently and in collaboration with others, design, develop and support the network infrastructure. This may involve entire life cycle management and support of network entities such as copper and fiber infrastructure, routers and switches, traffic shapers, VPN systems, firewalls, IPS systems, load balancers, VoIP infrastructure, wireless infrastructure, and monitoring and alerting infrastructure.
  • Independently and in collaboration with others ensure that network documentation, including design documents, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test and support plans, as-built diagrams and specifications, as well as run books are up-to-date.
  • Present and communicate technical design and training topics to medium sized audiences of mixed levels of technical savvy. Mentor DIT colleagues as the need comes up.

This position is considered an essential position and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of University services.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:
  • Experience: Six (6) to (9) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure.
  • Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced-level understanding of IP routing, Ethernet switching, wireless, IP multicast routing, VOIP, QoS, network management principles, firewalls, VPNs, network security principles, network capacity planning and management.
  • In depth technical and “hands-on” knowledge of protocols and standards: TCP/IP, 802.1x, NAC, OSPF, BGP, IPSec, VxLAN / EVPN, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, GRE, IPAM and NTP.
  • Hands on experience with enterprise level routers, switches, firewalls and network load balancers.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot configuration-level, as well as architecture-level trouble scenarios across multiple network devices and platforms.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to to lead presentations with small to medium sized groups.
  • Able to organize and provide direction to junior staff members.
  • A demonstrated commitment to customer service.
  • Provides leadership and helps bridge the gap between team manager and team members on technical topics.
  • Ability to effectively manage workload and delivery assignments on time.
  • Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline is highly desired.
  • Experience in a large scale higher education environment is preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of Aruba, Cisco routers and switches.
  • Knowledge of Palo Alto Firewalls
  • Knowledge of A10 load balancers
  • Knowledge of network management and monitoring tools, such as PRTG.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with Infoblox DDI and NetMRI
  • Understanding of basic software development principles and network automation. Hands-on expertise developing network automation code in Python using best practices for software development and version control.
  • Server Operating Systems, including: Windows, UNIX (Linux/FreeBSD).
  • Understanding of databases and database management systems. (SQL, Oracle).
  • Ability to develop network automation code in Python.
  • Scaling designs to 50,000 user enterprise networks in all networking and telecommunications areas.

Additional Certifications:

CCIE or CCNP is preferred, but not required.

Benefits Included:

Salary range $135,000 – $158,000

Physical Demands

Predominantly operates in an office environment though significant periods of time may be spent in computer room and communications equipment spaces for installation, testing, and troubleshooting. Some work (less than 5%) requires moving and lifting of heavy communications equipment. Position also requires being on call to provide some outside of business hours support. This position is considered an essential position and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of University services.
