Job Description

Description

Are you passionate about embracing challenges and deploying solutions?

In the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Group, our dedicated multidisciplinary staff work side-by-side in the lab and in the field to develop and deploy ISR sensors, payloads and vehicles.  These systems are engineered to accomplish critical missions for our diverse set of government sponsors. The people who work here embrace challenges, adapt to dynamic environments, and are continually looking to advance their technical and leadership skills. Our senior staff are passionate about mentoring and coaching junior staff to continue to strengthen our impactful teams. Are you interested in being a member of our group? Join us at APL, a national leader in scientific research and development, and an employer that prioritizes innovation, impact, and personal development!

We are seeking an embedded systems engineer with expertise in implementing sophisticated signal processing algorithms onto FPGA hardware to help us rapidly develop tailored sensor systems to attain information in the world’s most austere environments. Our team is motivated by the belief that timely and actionable information is key to our nation’s preeminence. You will join a team of engineers in a collaborative development environment to adapt and field new technologies.

As an Autonomous Systems FPGA Engineer you will…

  • Develop, test and tune algorithms for communications, parameter estimation, or system control for use in embedded systems.
  • Implement algorithms onto FPGA hardware while interfacing to related sensors, memories and peripherals.
  • Provide domain expertise and experience in implementing advanced signal processing algorithms onto embedded targets (Microcontrollers, Embedded Linux, FPGA, DSP, and GPU-based hardware) for various projects.
  • Specify, identify, and integrate commercial and custom components for the rapid development of electronic systems.
  • Field test and support advanced electronic systems.
  • Document system development, engineering analysis and testing consistent with quality requirements. Present information to review teams.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • BS in Electrical, Computer Engineering or closely related field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant FPGA design experience.
  • Strong multi-tasking and engineering/analytical skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Desire to travel to CONUS/OCONUS field test locations such as the desert, mountains, or ocean for up to 15% of your time.
  • Are able to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • MS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of relevant FPGA design experience.
  • Effectively led and interacted with teams of different experience levels and academic backgrounds.
  • One to five years professional work experience with knowledge of and hands-on experience with developing algorithms and implementing them onto embedded devices including software-defined platforms.
  • Experience with development and deployment of sensors and systems in field environments.
  • An active Top Secret security clearance or higher.
