If so, please apply to be the Associate Director of Research Strategy and External Relations for the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative (ND-EI) and the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (ECG).

Emerging from the University’s new Strategic Framework, ND-EI is a collaborative cross-campus
initiative to establish Notre Dame as a premier university for research in ethics. The Institute for
Ethics and the Common Good is under the umbrella of the Ethics Initiative and serves as the
primary home for interdisciplinary groups of faculty fellows, faculty researchers, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate scholars, and corporate and industry leaders interested in engaging complex ethical challenges of our time and affect our ability to lead valuable, meaningful lives. Working closely with the Institute’s faculty director and managing director, the associate director serves on the Institute’s leadership team to help to advance the mission and strategic objectives of the ND EI and the Institute, and is responsible for overseeing the research strategy and programs of the Institute. He/she is the vital liaison between the ND EI and Institute academic research programs and global corporate and nonprofit leaders. Leveraging the invaluable research and scholarly resources convened at Notre Dame, including within the Jenkins Center for Virtue Ethics, the associate director will also envision, develop, and manage a new program to support leaders external to the university who face ethically complex issues.
The associate director will report to the managing director. This is a full-time, 12 month, limited
term position for three years with the intention to make it non-limited once permanent funding is
secured.

Essential duties include:
Program Management and Strategic Planning- 60%

Develop and Oversee the ECG research priorities: The Associate Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing strategies related to the research programs of the ECG. This includes (but not limited to):
  • managing the work of the Research Team staff, supporting the programmatic efforts of this team, and collaboratively developing a 5 year strategic plan for this newly created area within the ECG.
  • building support systems for ECG faculty (chairs, research, etc.) that advance faculty’s individual research programs.
  • leading strategic connections for collaboration and alignment with ECG, and other ND research initiatives.
  • overseeing research/scholarship programs in both foundational and applied ethics as an extension of the ND EI and ECG. (Examples could include: technology ethics, virtue ethics, business ethics, environmental ethics, among others). This also involves honing and reproducing research lab models (E.G. IBM tech ethics lab) as opportunities arise.
  • leading opportunities for the development of research outputs related to ethics (conferences, workshops, publications, etc.).
  • managing current ECG-wide research grant opportunities, and seeking, supporting, and/or managing new grant opportunities.

Develop/Direct the ECG current and new external relations strategy: The Associate Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a strategy to connect research and scholarship in ethics–produced through and in collaboration with the ECG– to relevant constituents outside the academy.
  • cultivate and serve as the primary lead with external relations interested in joint programs, particularly related to applied ethics.
  • develop a multi-pronged approach to bridge faculty research to leadership/fields across industry, government, and the broader public square through mainstream outlets.
  • create strategies for the dissemination of scholarly content produced through the ECG.
  • develop and direct training opportunities for faculty and students for translating research for public consumption and impact.

Develop/Direct a new Ethics Program for External Stakeholders: The Associate Director will develop and manage a newly conceived program that will convene and facilitate experts in ethics and corporate/industry leaders grappling with emerging ethical crises in their fields.
  • responsible for robust benchmarking, program development and implementation, and developing modes of marketing/communications/reporting/assessment that demonstrate impact while maintaining the confidential nature of the venture.
  • cultivate relationships between expert faculty and corporate/industry leaders who face difficult ethical challenges, convening these stakeholders for educational opportunities.
  • provide an environment where thought-leadership, trusted dialogue, and scholarly resources related to ethical dilemmas are central to the shared experience of cohorts gathered.

Management and Administration- 30%

Supervise and provide strategic leadership to the Research Team which includes
three staff, and postdocs:
This role will also serve as the administrative lead for
receiving and placing additional postdocs within the ND EI and ECG research ecosystem. Additionally, this position will support research assistant professors and faculty program chairs.

Serve as a member of the ECG leadership team, including:
  • contributing to the strategic priorities and planning of the ECG to ensure long-term sustainability of all programs.
  • helping to identify and implement strategic opportunities for horizontal programmatic development across ECG teams (E.G. Education/Formation).

Represent the ECG across campus and with various institutional partners outside
Notre Dame

Collaborate/contribute to ECG wide initiatives and special projects as assigned

Assessment and Academic Reporting- 10%
  • Tracking, assessing, capturing, and utilizing research and scholarly outcomes to grow the Institute’s and Notre Dame’s research impact and reputation in ethics.
  • Internal academic reporting and works with the faculty director to publish findings, best practices, and outcomes related to research in ethics.
  • Reporting related to grants or outside funding is also the responsibility of the Associate Director

Working closely with the managing director and assistant director of communications to convey relevant stories, data, and information related to ethics-focused research conducted through the ND EI and ECG.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters, MBA, or higher level degree required, ideally with significant team management and/or policy emphasis. A focus on ethics is a plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise (education and/or experience) in program management, strong
    administrative leadership, staff supervision and development are essential for success in this role.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience, preferably within a corporate, research and/or university
    setting.
  • Able to manage a fast-paced environment with the temperament and skill to be agile and pivot quickly if needed.
  • Highly relational and able to work with a diverse range of stakeholders, industries.
  • Skilled in strategic planning, implementation, and problem-solving.
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, while also being visionary.
  • Effective writer and communicator.
  • Strong collaborative and teamwork skills, humble, adaptable, relational, and willing to fully contribute to ambitious goals within an inclusive, diverse research environment.
