Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Staff Accountant I reports to the Director of Accounting and is responsible in assisting the Director of Accounting and the Accountants in the maintenance of the College’s accounting systems and internal controls to provide accountability and reporting for the general operating funds of the College.
 
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Verify accuracy of data provided from reports generated by the accounting system.     Ensures that all cash transactions are property recorded.
  2. Prepare bank reconciliations on a monthly basis.
  3. Prepare lead schedules, supporting information and other schedules requested by  our external auditors during our fiscal year end audit.
  4. Develop reports for analysis of balance sheet accounts such as cash, inter-fund liabilities.
  5. Responsible for proper classification of expenses on Auxiliary and ITIA Funds in the general ledger and the financial statements.
  6. Assist Staff Accountant II with processing travel advances, expense reports and reclassification of expenses into the proper accounts and assists in maintaining the travel procedures manual.
  7. Record month end entries and monitors balances for all Auxiliary and ITIA Funds accounts.
  8. Assists Director of Accounting with the virtual card payment process.
  9. Review and monitor vendor statements, collect invoices from vendors, reconciling payments, collect credits and work hand in hand with accounts payable staff to deter payment of past due invoices.
  10. Reconcile and prepare monthly entries for P-Card, Web Receipts and Amex charges.
  11. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director of Accounting and Vice President of Finance and Administration with the utmost confidentiality as most activities and transactions of the office are of sensitive and confidential nature.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field with at least 18 credit hours in accounting.
  • One to two years of work experience in an accounting-related position.
 
Preferred:
  • Experience in governmental accounting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Skilled in the use of 10 key calculators and the use of personal computer software such as Excel, Word, and other Windows applications. 
  • Must know Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, fund accounting, and other industry guidelines. 
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively and work with personnel, management, granting agencies, and customers professionally and courteously.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines. 
  • Must have strong analytic skills.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as a team player within the department with others. 
  • Must be able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 
  • Must be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Requirements  
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit.  
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
