Job Summary Description:

Grossmont College seeks a dynamic, culturally responsive and social justice driven expert who understands and can advocate for CalWORKs Student Parents. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Services and Special Programs, the CalWORKs Counselor shall provide information and strategic guidance to create a safe space; supporting the educational success, onboarding, retention, and educational goal completion of CalWORKs Student Parents. This candidate provides academic, mentorship, and career counseling as well as the development and implementation of campus educational programs and services specifically designed to address the needs and challenges unique to student parents in poverty, while serving as the campus expert of and liaison to internal and external resources, partnerships, and affiliates, in service of our student parents community at Grossmont College. Counselors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the AFT contract available at: http://www.gcccd.edu/humanresources/labor-contracts.html.

The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provides academic, personal, and career related counseling to prospective, new, and continuing CalWORKs Student Parents.
  • Inform district Guided Pathways work to reflect the experiences of CalWORKs Student Parents.
  • Assists CalWORKs Student Parents with identifying their educational and career goals and developing abbreviated educational plans and comprehensive educational plans in line with the student's stated educational goals.
  • Interprets university transfer requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops effective assessment tools that assist the college with understanding the specific needs of CalWORKs Student Parents.
  • Facilitates counseling courses and workshops pertaining to career planning, college success, and other personal development courses offered within the Counseling division.
  • Designs and maintains processes to track academic success of student participants.
  • Prepares oral and written reports, as needed, related to issues and concerns impacting our CalWORKs Student Parents.
  • Participates in college-wide planning and evaluations processes.
  • Participates in all divisional meetings and trainings to assist with maintaining currency in the educational counseling profession.
  • Liaise with county contractors and the Department of Social Service.
  • Others duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development; OR the equivalent,

AND

(1) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons challenged by language, social or economic disadvantages

OR

(2) Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons challenged by language, social or economic disadvantages

AND

Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons challenged by language, social or economic disadvantages

  • Minimum of two years' experience working as an educational counselor in the California Community College system.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge and practice of student development theory, counseling and advising practice, and current trends/issues related to CalWORKs Student Parents in higher education
  • Experience and knowledge in developing, planning, designing, implementing, and assessing programs for CalWORKs Student Parents
  • Demonstrated experience advising CalWORKs Student Parents individually and in groups on academic and personal matters
  • Experience working with students from low-income, traditionally underserved, and traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Comprehensive, current knowledge of resources and educational policies, procedures and practices regarding CalWORKs Student Parents
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding about unique issues that impact CalWORKs Student Parents
  • Experience in effective outreach and networking, as well as experience with high impact practices that facilitate access, success, and equity for a diverse student population
  • Experience coordinating and presenting at events including conferences, workshops, and trainings
