Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Music & Social Identity (MSI) research stream within the First Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) program is seeking to hire an advanced student worker for the position of Web Developer and Graphic Designer during Summer and Fall 2024. This position will work closely with the MSI faculty leader to develop a website that will be used to host student research visualized through different digital humanities tools. The Web Developer and Graphic Designer will be responsible for implementing a site template within WordPress, installing necessary plugins, creating the site structure, managing the implementation of research visualization resources, developing a brand kit, leading the creation of graphic designs needed for research visualization, tracking site statistics, and developing systems to allow a sustainable infrastructure of digital tools.


Responsibilities
  • Administrative Tasks
    • Log work hours in PHR system (approximately 5-10 hours per week)
    • Attend regular, weekly meetings with MSI faculty leader
    • Create training materials for students
    • Create systems to manage site health and continued design
    • Document work to establish a sustainable infrastructure
    • Timely completion of all tasks
  • Web Development
    • Manage student/editor access to site
    • Implement adaptive design
    • Consideration of UI (user interface) and UX (user experience) in design
    • Research, install, and integrate appropriate plug-ins
    • Track and synthesize data of user analytics
  • Graphic Design
    • Develop brand kit (logos, web banners, icons, etc.) for research stream
    • Creatively design public-facing material for site and print purposes based on research stream research scope, topic, and values
    • Assist students in using Canva and Adobe Creative Suite when necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Current advanced undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Experience:
  • Demonstrated skills in graphic design as well as web development, and design.
  • Advanced experience in HTML and CSS in WordPress.
  • Advanced experience in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Creativity in crafting relevant, innovative, and visually appealing content
  • Detail-oriented, timely, and motivated to contribute to a team product
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively
