History Assistant Professor (Native American History)

Job Description

Position Summary


The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.

The faculty member will:
  • teach courses that emphasize Indigenous perspectives and implement creative adaptations to changing historical circumstances.
  • demonstrate experience communicating and working effectively with a diverse student population, and the potential to build collaborative partnerships with Sacramento Area Indian and Native American communities.
  • provide commitment and improved educational opportunities and outcomes
    for students from historically underserved, marginalized, and/or disproportionately impacted communities.

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Typical Duties


The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching courses in all levels of lower division general and specialized Indian and Native American History courses, such as:

  • HIST 310 History of the United States (To 1877)
  • HIST 311 History of the United States (1865 – Present)
  • HIST 323 History of the United States: The American Indian Experience

The faculty member may include topics such as sovereignty, settler colonialism, treaties, re-indigeneity/decolonization; cultural, economic, religious, environmental practices and experiences; and intersections of US and Native histories.

In addition, the faculty member will be responsible for use of individual and institutional student outcome data, disaggregated by race and ethnicity and other categories, and student ready and equitable practices for:
  • Developing, assessing, and revising curricula and course materials
  • Creating and participating in equitable program review processes
  • Developing Student Learning Outcomes assessment that is relevant and responsive to our historically underrepresented and underserved student populations, particularly our disproportionately impacted populations
  • Maintaining accessible and scheduled student and office hours
  • Participating in department/division meetings
  • Pursuing professional growth activities, including professional development that enhances one’s Equity Reflection on the Peer Review process, the New Faculty Academy and orientation, and opportunities that strengthen equity and culturally responsiveness skills
  • Participate on community based, district, and/or college committees
  • Collaborating with other departments and community partners to improve student success

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Have a master’s degree in History; OR a bachelor’s degree in History and a master’s degree in Political Science, Humanities, Geography, Area Studies, Women’s Studies, Social Science, or Ethnic Studies; OR, the equivalent.*. All degrees must be from an accredited institution completed by January 16, 2025.
  2. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
