Chemistry Assistant Professor
Job Description
Position Summary
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member.
The department maintains a focus on:- Cultural competence, defined as an ongoing process of increasing the the ability to assess and revise individual and organizational behavior, in response to an expanded understanding of culture. Culture refers to an integrated pattern of collective behavior, including habits, customs, values, beliefs, and institutions.

Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching courses in all levels of Chemistry offered at the college:- Chemistry 305 (introduces health science students to the basics of general chemistry)
- Chemistry 306 (a continuation of CHEM 305, it covers the organic functional groups and reactions involved in the chemistry of life (biochemistry) as applied to the health sciences)
- Chemistry 309 (a survey of general, organic, and biological chemistry specifically designed for students majoring in nursing and other health-related fields.)
- Chemistry 310 (a chemical calculations course to prepare students for the general chemistry curriculum)
- Chemistry 400 and 401 (two-semester general chemistry sequence)
- Chemistry 420 and 421 (two-semester organic chemistry sequence)
- Chemistry 423 (a survey of organic chemistry designed primarily for students majoring in life science, nutrition/dietetics, and related fields)
- Creating and maintaining currency on laboratory activities, lecture and/or demonstrations.
- Providing field expertise in order to keep the Chemistry department and its equipment up to date with modern education and industry standards.
- Utilizing a variety of teaching methods and technologies to keep students motivated and engaged.
- Integrating computer data acquisition using sensors in lab activities.
- Providing hands-on learning opportunities.
- Participating in outreach and distance education.
- Mentoring and supporting student club activities.
- Developing projects and grants for the benefit of students.
- Working effectively and collegially with other members of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
- Have a master’s degree in Chemistry OR a bachelor’s in Chemistry or Biochemistry and a master’s in Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Physics, Molecular Biology or Geochemistry OR the equivalent.* All degrees must be from an accredited institution, competed by August 22, 2024.
