Introduction:

Under the general direction of the Head Librarian, Library and Learning Resources (LLR), this position will promote and develop Open Educational Resources (OER) at the college, working with instructors, students, and OER advocates at other University of Hawai‘i (UH) campuses to develop resources for the UH System’s TXT0 (Textbook Cost: $0) program. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide training, research support, and basic technology support for OER projects to instructors at the Kapi‘olani Community College (KapCC). 

  • Identify and coordinate incentives and programs that assist faculty to develop free learning materials for students. 

  • Oversee the planning, designing, implementing, digital housing, maintaining, evaluating, and promoting of the KapCC Library's online digital collections. [Note: Collections will include digital collections appropriate for a publicly accessible academic institutional repository and reflecting library, college curriculum, college accreditation, and community-interest activities. This position will also manage a small print collection.] 

  • Create, develop and maintain user-centered digital collections consisting of text, graphic, photographic, and multimedia items to support research, teaching and learning objectives. 

  • Manage the KapCC repository and work to improve online collection systems and management. 

  • Monitor and research copyright intellectual property issues regarding digital collections, open education, and open access publishing. Maintain best practice documentation for digital initiatives. 

  • Supervise employee(s) in planning, installing, training, maintaining, documenting, and supporting all of the library’s computer hardware, software, printing services, and networks for public and staff computers. 

  • Supervise employee(s) at the KapCC’s Testing Center and lead activities related to shared decision-making, goal setting, and planning. Submit the Annual Report of Program Data for the Testing Center.

  • Serve in a leadership role researching and implementing sustainable digital initiatives in librarianship. 

  • Work independently and in collaboration with other libraries, campuses, and UH representatives. 

  • Identify potential sources for external funding of library-based digital initiatives, apply for those resources and administer successful grant-funded proposals projects. Establish UH-wide collaborations to support these projects.

  • Provide general reference service to library users for both face-to-face and distance learning courses. 

  • Pursue professional development opportunities and keep current with emerging issues and trends in OER, library IT best practices, digital metadata and preservation practices, and management best practices.

  • May require some evening and weekend hours

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program. 

Note: Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • One (1) or more years of professional experience in the provision of open educational resource training and support for instructors, including experience with OER creation and/or adaptation, providing research support to faculty, knowledge of open access, open licensing, and publishing platforms. 

  • Working knowledge of copyright and educational fair use.

  • One (1) or more years of professional experience in the design and production of digital collections and the maintenance of online databases, such as repositories, for document and image access.

  • Demonstrated professional experience obtaining funding through grant proposals.

  • Working knowledge of digital library technologies, standards, issues, metadata, and trends.

  • One (1) or more years of professional experience developing workshops and/or training materials.

  • Working knowledge of preservation practices for physical collection items such as papers, photographs, and negatives.

  • Experience providing undergraduate reference service

  • Demonstrated ability to address diversity, equity, and inclusion in the library setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise employees. 

  • Functional knowledge of project management including prioritization, delegation, evaluation and workflow management. 

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and solve problems by taking initiatives, showing creativity, and flexibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.

  • Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College’s vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai‘i and the world.
