Applications are invited for a one-year appointment, starting fall 2024, as a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Lecturer in the area of Black media studies—in the departments of Media Studies and/or African American and African Studies—at the University of Virginia in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. This position may be renewable for an additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance and available funding. This is a 12-month salaried position with full-time benefits. Appropriate research and mentoring support will be provided, including faculty mentoring and professional trajectory coaching. In addition to the home department(s), the Postdoctoral Research Associate will primarily be associated with the Black Fantastic Media Research Lab.

 

Responsibilities would include:

  • Teach or co-teach two classes per year focused on Black media.

  • Develop the infrastructure (e.g., programmatic focus; identify personnel; communication/marketing/website maintenance; establish steering committee) for the Black Fantastic Media Research Lab.

  • Conduct independent research and publish in the research associate’s area of specialty

  • Represent the program vis-à-vis other research programs and functional support offices within UVA and vis-à-vis external stakeholders.

  • Support the program’s Director, Robin R. Means Coleman, PhD

  • Co-mentor undergraduate and graduate students

  • Other administrative tasks as needed.

Education: Doctoral degree


Preferred Qualifications

  • Education- There are few disciplines that do not engage in the study of Black people and media. Applicants in all fields will be considered, with the following areas particularly encouraged: Media studies, African American and African studies, American studies, Anthropology, Education, English, History, Music, Science & Technology studies, Sociology, Studio Art, Women, Gender & Sexuality, or others. Regardless of discipline, applicants should be strongly oriented to interdisciplinary work.

  • Demonstrated interest in developing a research center

  • Interdisciplinary research, experience in and evidence of achievement in field(s) relevant to Black media studies

  • Research promotion/conference planning experience

  • Experience supporting the learning objectives of undergraduate and graduate students through inclusive pedagogies


Anticipated Salary
: $53,500 per year plus UVA benefits.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
