Position Summary

Manages and ensures the center meets the standards required for National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Five Star accreditation. Oversees all aspects of curriculum and instruction for the center, maintains center data, and supports staff and teacher recruitment.
Actively participates in and contributes to continuous quality improvement through data collection, observations, and portfolios for all classrooms.
The assistant director supports all laboratory school programming including scheduling and evaluation for practicum students, apprentices, student teaching, and classroom research, and supports mentorship by classroom teachers. Is able to assume all duties as the director when needed for supervision and operations of the center.
 
 
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains and implements developmentally appropriate educational practices as identified by the National Association of Education Young Children (NAEYC).
  • Responsible for all aspects of NAEYC accreditation including annual/quarterly reports, annual surveys, observations, classroom files, applications, and portfolios.
  • Works with the Director to develop daily schedules to maintain required adult/child ratios in all classrooms at all times.
  • Works with appropriate departments to recruit and train employees to provide service learning opportunities and support to practicum students at the center.
  • Creates a yearly professional development calendar to include planning time, professional learning, and curriculum implementation for classroom teachers and staff.
  • Establishes and conducts regular professional development and training for staff and teachers, including a pre-term professional development week.
  • Works with vendors to purchase materials and curriculum for the center
  • Directs bilingual curriculum development for the classrooms.
  • Ensures teachers have access to high-quality curriculum materials through regular review and modeling of best practices.
  • Oversight of all PreK programs to include EPICS, quarterly reports, final reports, invoicing, and teacher recruitment.
  • Covers for teacher and staff absences when necessary.
  • Monitors and develops processes for continuous quality improvements to meet licensing and accreditation requirements
  • Works with kitchen staff to maintain compliance for the CACFP program requirements.
  • Conducts tours and provides program information; responds to questions from potential clients, external organizations, job applicants, and others.
  • Creates family activities in collaboration with teachers and staff.
  • Works with community partners to build strong relationships for referral and family opportunities
  • Provides communication to families through a monthly center newsletter and timely communication regarding all center activities.
  • Maintains the center website including the family calendar and center updates
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of anti-bias curriculum standards.
  • Knowledge of current research pertaining to the impact of quality childcare on child development.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education best practices.
  • Knowledge of personnel management principles.
  • Knowledge of college budgeting policies.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals representing different skills, attitudes, and disciplines among the college community.
  • Ability to represent the college at public meetings, conferences, and board meetings.
  • Ability to apply sustainability concepts into work systems.
  • Ability to apply a model of continuous improvement.
 
Additional Job Description (Minimum Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with four years of early childhood education teaching or administrative experience or
  • Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with two years of early childhood education teaching or administrative experience.
  • Equivalent-related experience may be substituted for education on a year-by-year basis.
  • Background check required.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting program(s) with NAEYC accreditation and state licensing.
  • Experience with state-funded New Mexico Prekindergarten programs
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Experience with bilingual curriculum implementation
  • Experience overseeing practicum students in an early childhood center or through higher education
 
Work Hours
  • 8 am to 5 pm Monday – Friday. Weekend and evening work may be required occasionally. All work performed on campus.
 
Physical Demands
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office or classroom. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
