The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the effects of chemical interventions on biological systems. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to cutting edge drug discovery. Under close supervision, assist in performing PCR genotyping and breeding of transgenic lines. Perform laboratory and tissue culture facility maintenance duties (including ordering supplies, assuring that lab equipment is kept in working condition and general clean up). Assist supervisor and laboratory members with special experiments and various projects as necessary. Interact easily with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students and research technicians in a 30+ people sized laboratory.

• Two (2) years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in chemistry, biochemistry, or biology, and one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Knowledge of tissue culture.

• Attention to protocols and details.

• Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and equipment, including preparation of buffers.

• Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents.

• Ability to work independently and cooperatively.

• Ability to communicate with colleagues and superiors, including asking questions and notification of problems.

• Ability to follow basic research protocols and follow instructions closely.

• College degree in chemistry, biochemistry or biology.

• Experience with preparing primary cultures, maintaining cell lines and preparing chemical solutions.

• Understanding of UC ordering procedures.

• Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

• Willingness to work evenings and weekends, if necessary.
