Health Information Technician, Principal
Job Description
Your Role
The Information Security team is responsible for governance over the exchange of protected health information (PHI) and sensitive data with external entities. The Health Information Technician Principal will report to the Senior Manager, Information Security Data Exchange. In this role you will be responsible for Managing the access, use, and disclosure of PHI using laws, regulations, and guidelines (e.g., release of information, accounting of disclosures), apply health information guidelines (e.g. coding guidelines, CMS, facility or regional best practices, federal and state regulations) by establishing health information standards and developing/maintaining the integrity, data standards, and auditing completion of the health record. You and your team will also Assess and maintain the integrity of the Master Patient Index (MPI), maintain EHR reports, data, workflow, provide education and support, and mitigate privacy and security risk by identifying and correcting issues.
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Build a Health Information program that manages access, use, and disclosure of PHI for the organization.
- Create relationships within Blue Shield to understand business needs for data sharing and work with them to accomplish those requirements within medical coding, CMS, federal/state regulations, and security and privacy frameworks.
- Provide leadership and contribution to the planning, design, and support of the information security data exchange program.
- Build cross functional relationships with operational business partners to establish sensitive data sharing standards, compile healthcare statistics and reports, analyze and define common data metrics, map internal data sources,
- Maintain standards for Health Information functions (e.g., chart completion, coding accuracy, ROI turnaround time, departmental workflow
- Leverage advanced technology to better manage the quality and controls of sensitive data sharing through automated policies, processes, and tools.
- Develop and implement a Health Information monitoring program to establish compliance and report noncompliance and quality control measures to uphold accuracy and integrity in the release of information processes.
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Requires a bachelors degree in business administration, medical billing/coding, healthcare administration, nursing, or equivalent experience.
- Requires at least 10 years of prior relevant experience
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) strongly preferred
- Industry knowledge of healthcare billing, coding guidelines, risk management, and health information standards strongly preferred
- Business acumen, strategic thinking, financial analytical skills, and decision-making skills strongly preferred
Pay Range:
The pay range for this role is: $ 145970.00 to $ 218900.00 for California.

Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.
