Description
Under general supervision, performs highly responsible and varied specialized duties that facilitate KCC’s initiatives to promote student success, retention, and completion. The Academic Retention and Success Coach will play a pivotal role in providing tailored supports and timely interventions to help students overcome challenges and achieve their academic goals and foster their personal growth. This position requires a proactive approach, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and staff.
Examples of Duties
A. Monitors student populations, particularly those who self-identify as academically at-risk, English learners, first-generation, unemployed single parents, or other underrepresented student populations.
B. Provides individualized academic support to students with a cumulative GPA below 2.0, helping them identify barriers to academic success and develop strategies for improvement and resiliency. Works closely with students to understand their unique needs, set goals for academic improvement, develop personalized action plans, and identify resources needed for academic progression and completion.
C. Collaborates with the advising team to regularly check in with students to assess their progress, provide academic coaching and encouragement, and offer additional support as needed.
D. Acts as a liaison between students and various student affairs areas and academic support services such as academic advisement, counseling, disability services, financial aid, tutoring, library services, career services, and other support services and provides student referrals for those services.
E. In collaboration with faculty, develops and facilitates academic workshops and seminars on topics related to study skills, time management, and other areas identified as critical for student retention and to support them in achieving personal and academic success.
F. Monitors and responds to student alerts generated by faculty and staff through the college’s retention software, Advise, regarding student academic performance, ie., excessive absences/frequent tardies, course overall grade <75%, lack of participation, low test scores, missing assignments, among others.
G. Collects, evaluates, and shares data related to GPA, course completion rates, course withdrawals, and academic progress to identify trends and areas for targeted intervention. Maintains accurate records of student interactions, interventions, and outcomes. Tracks student progress over time and generates reports on the effectiveness of academic support efforts for internal review and continuous improvement. Researches best practices in student persistence and completion in order to develop appropriate retention initiatives.
H. Attends Strategic Enrollment Management Committee meetings and serves on the SEM Retention Subcommittee to support institutional strategic and long-term goals related to student enrollment and retention.
I. Serves as a voting member of the Academic Appeals Committee. Supports students through the Academic Appeals process, including students repeating courses and returning from suspension. Ensures students are adhering to restrictions placed on their repeat/return as identified by the Academic Appeals Committee.
J. May teach ORIN 1541 Foundations for Student Success.
K. Builds relationships with students through outreach initiatives, campus events, and participation in student organizations to promote a sense of belonging and connectedness.
L. Attends college-wide convocations, participates in Commencement and other academic events and ceremonies.
Minimum Qualifications
A. Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree or equivalent in-depth specialized training directly related to the type of work being performed is preferred.
B. At least three to seven years of related work experience required. Experience working in the Community College setting preferred.
C. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
D. Experience with student retention software or similar systems preferred.
E. Knowledge of best practices in student counseling and development and academic retention strategies.
F. Empathy, patience, and a genuine commitment to helping students academically.
