Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator

Job Description

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETY (EHS) COORDINATOR, Mechanical Engineering (MechE), to work alongside MIT’s EHS Office in providing day-to-day oversight of the EHS management system (EHS-MS) and ensuring that EHS compliance and regulatory requirements are met and that best practices are followed.  Will promote a culture of safety; review training documents and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring new SOPs are written for new experiments/chemicals; share best practices; collaborate with researchers to minimize risk and conduct potentially hazardous activities in accordance with EHS requirements; support stakeholders in their efforts to effectively execute their responsibilities in the EHS-MS; share information about the EHS-MS; co-chair the DLC EHS committee; ensure that new EHS representatives are oriented and hold meetings with department EHS representatives; monitor training compliance; escalate EHS-MS issues as appropriate to the DLC and/or EHS leadership; ensure that bi-annual training reconciliation of principal investigator affiliations is being completed by EHS representatives; validate annual chemical regulatory inventory and reporting and weekly Level I inspections; conduct Level II inspections twice a year; facilitate EHS questions, requests, and projects; participate in after-action reviews and the preparation of the emergency preparedness plan; serve as the emergency preparedness coordinator; respond to emergencies; and perform other duties as assigned.  

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, EHS, or related discipline; four years’ relevant experience; Microsoft Office proficiency and ability to learn specialized EHS computer applications; excellent organizational, administrative, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills; and ability to work alone or within a team-oriented environment.  Seek someone who demonstrates good judgment, is goal-oriented, and can adapt their approach in a highly research-oriented environment that involves frequent interaction with faculty, students, and research staff.  Job #24120-9
