Essential Functions


The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) supports postdoctoral training and the postdoc community across the university. This role will manage a major OPA mission to development of a diverse community of postdoctoral appointees by developing outreach recruitment strategies, evaluating policy, and assessing training activities.


  • Program management:
    • Evaluate and assess how current resources, training programs, and policies support a diverse community of postdoctoral appointees.
    • Develop new training approaches, resources and policies based on assessments and best practices.
  • Internal partnerships: Partner with senior leadership offices, including the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Diversity; the Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the School of Medicine; and the Deans of Schools on the Chancellor’s postdoctoral fellowship program, retention practices, and training activities. Liaise with the OPA Faculty Advisory Committee and the WashU Postdoc Society. Serve on the university’s Equity Council.
  • Recruitment: Strategize recruitment of postdoctoral appointee candidates. Develop relationships with target institutions, collaborate with schools and training programs to develop effective strategies. This includes travel to local, regional and national meetings (NPA, SACNAS, ABRCMS, etc.) on behalf of the OPA.
  • Reporting: Analyze data and prepare reports annually for university leadership, federal funding and national reporting purposes as required on postdoc retention and outcomes. Strategize OPA approach to data collection with a focus on outcomes.
  • Financial: Formulate and manage the recruitment budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Required Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree and five years of related experience or a master’s degree and three years of related experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ph.D. degree with two years of experience.
    • Project management or research experience in postgraduate education.
    • Strong ability to create and maintain collaborative partnerships with key leaders.
    • Experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
    • Commitment to advance diversity, equity and inclusion. Understanding of current trends in higher education diversity, equity and inclusion work.
    • Demonstrated understanding of current issues and trends in postdoctoral training; general knowledge of temporary visas.
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, derive trends and prepare reports for key leaders.
    • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively.
    • Ability to manage social media accounts.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple requirements.

    Salary Range

    The hiring range for this position is $52,943 - $68,816 annually.
