About the Department

The North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking to hire a Director of Information Technology to oversee our college IT/Computing Resources department.

The successful candidate will be customer support driven and oversee a department of IT professionals that support the diverse, continually changing information technology needs for the CVM. These needs include support for faculty, staff, students, researchers, administration and the Veterinary Hospital. Computing Resources must keep in the forefront of computing technologies, support existing technologies, as well as protect the integrity of IT processes and data. The CVM Computing Resources department provides direct support of the institution’s missions, including research, instruction, and service.

Essential Job Duties

The Director of Information and Computing Resources position will direct Information Technology strategies across all departments within North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). This senior information technology position will oversee the college’s Computing Resources department, which includes engineering, application development, and support (helpdesk and special services) activities.

This position, in coordination with the University Office of Information Technology, is responsible for maintaining the integrity and security of all electronic data within the college and following all guidelines and policies set forth by the state and University. The position also includes participating on university wide committees representing the College’s IT needs and providing direct support as well as management of the Computing Resources team including staff supervision and budgeting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and manage CVM computing and information technology personnel, strategic plans, policies, programs, computer services, network communications, A/V support and management information services to accomplish the College’s missions.
  • Direct the continual development and maintenance of a highly complex and integrated electronic medical records system for the veterinary hospital and research missions.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of a highly complex educational computing system that tracks DVM student learning outcomes, assessments, and compliance with accreditation standards.
  • Direct the information and data integrity of the college administration and its departments.
  • Oversee development of custom applications and integration into existing systems.
  • Serve as primary consultant to College leadership in strategic planning and implementation regarding all equipment and software used to support the academic, research, and service missions of the college in alignment with the College and University strategic goals.
  • Initiate and direct the selection/purchase of items for computing, including hardware, software, classroom technology, and other computing and network needs.
  • Initiate and manage OIT Modification Requests for all proposed IT changes to the College buildings, voice, and data networks.
  • Manage IT budget allocated for college Computing Resources unit.
  • Represent the College on University IT governance committees: Campus IT Director’s, Academic IT Director’s, Communication Technologies Advisory Group, LAN Administrators Group, Mobile Device Security Work Group, and others.
  • Build and maintain the IT Business Continuity Plan within the Living Disaster Recovery Planning System in alignment with the University plan.
  • Determine backup, retention, and security strategies for CVM academic and research data.
  • Provide and support a robust computing environment for the college..
  • Oversee the management and development of our databases on premise and in the cloud environment, including but not limited to Oracle and MySQL databases
  • Oversee AI, cybersecurity, cloud and medical imaging implementation and maintenance as well as ensuring compliance with university requirements

Minimum Education and Experience

Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Substantial experience as a director of information technology or program manager
  • Experience strategically managing multiple, on-going and complex IT projects.
  • Strong communication skills (written and spoken) as well as proven leadership abilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of clients and colleagues.
  • Change management skills including the ability to work creatively and analytically using a solution-oriented approach.
  • As a senior leader, the ability to foster the college’s culture and values and provide leadership across major initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree and administrative experience
  • Experience in the IT technology field in an academic environment.
