Job Description

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

The Learning Resources Center (LRC) is an integral part of the academic units that report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The LRC advances the mission of the college through a comprehensive, readily accessible collection of VPCC curriculum related informational materials, instructional technologies, and other academic support services that meet the educational needs of students, faculty, and staff.

Provides individual and small group instruction and assistance to currently enrolled students who encounter science related problems in their VPCC courses. Provides a variety of science related instructional resources.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated science teaching and/or tutorial experience at the high school or two-year college level.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the pedagogical principles in working with adult learners. Demonstrated understanding of the pedagogical considerations in working with underprepared students.
  • Experience working with adult learners and underserved populations.
  • Experience and / or coursework in the fundamentals of chemistry and / or physics and other science principles.
  • Transfer information and problem-solving methods from familiar to unfamiliar contexts · Experience with learning management systems.

 

 
Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated understanding of science foundations (including Chemistry and/ or Physics), necessary for success in associate degrees and certificate level career and technical programs and courses.
  • Familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software, databases, and electronic communications.
 
Skills:
  • Excellent communication and strong listening skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Analytic problem-solving skills.
 
Abilities:
  • Ability to create a safe and engaging learning environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate with a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate study strategies to ensure academic success.
  • Ability to vary teaching methods and resources according to student needs.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to work at multiple campus locations.

Additional Considerations
  • Experience with scheduling and tutor administration software such as Navigate and Brainfuse.
  • Experience in a higher education setting.
